Thanks for tuning into another Leading with Empathy newsletter. This fortnightly package of ideas to help inspire empathetic leadership in the world. Let me know what resonates with you.
What if people are good and it is managers & professors are just jerks?
Imagine, you sit at a control panel. The man in a grey lab coat standing next to you instructs you to press a button labelled “Danger: severe shock”. You understand that pressing this button will send 375 volts of electricity through the body of a person in the next room. Just moments before you had pressed the button labelled 300 volts that were followed by screams of pain. Sweat starts to form on your brow.
From the next room, a whimpering voice begs you to stop. You hesitate. The man in the grey lab coat looks at you and says: “Please continue”. You are frozen, not wanting to hurt the man any more than you already have. The man in the lab coat prods you again: “The experiment requires you to continue.”
You feel wave after wave of guilt and fear wash over you. As you sit frozen at the control panel the man in the lab coat is unrelenting: “It is absolutely essential that you continue.”
The pressure is building. You feel your finger moving towards the button as the low sobs of the man in the next room start. Again you pause, hoping the is another way out. The man again pushes you to action: “You have no other choice but to continue.”
To your horror, your finger presses down on the button and blood-curdling screams are heard from the next room as 375 volts surge through the body of an already distressed victim.

Leader Set The Vision
When it comes to the role of a leader, we sometimes feel pressure to know all the answers and be in the weeds with our people. The reality is, that is likely their job, not yours. Instead, your job as a leader is to set a clear vision for the path forward, check out this short video from a conference I presented last year.
