Stop making WISH lists and make DECISION lists

Today is January 19, 2018. I have a question for you… did you have a New Year’s resolution set for yourself that has already been broken? Now is the time to be honest with yourself for that is when we start to make progress and not excuses.
If you said yes to this question then you are one of the millions of people who are in the same boat. Statistics say that 95% of people have broken their new resolutions by the end of the first week of the New Year. That was shocking to me when I started looking into this!
Just like you, I have done this year over year and decided to stop the cycle of disappointment.
I began to see resolutions as mere “wishes” and started looking into the reasons why I never stuck with them.
I looked up the definition of wish and this is what I found:
Definition of a WISH in the dictionary:
To feel or express a strong desire or hope for something that is not easily attainable; want something that cannot or probably will not happen.
Right there, I looked at my resolutions in a whole different light. Why was I wishing for things if they probably won’t happen? I wasn’t resolving anything. I either do it or I don’t do it. It is up to me and what I DECIDE to do.
Two years ago, I stopped making resolutions and wishes and I began making decisions regarding what I wanted in my life.
So each year instead of making a list of resolutions I write down 3 DECISIONS that I will accomplish in the year.
When you start changing your mindset and decide that you are in control of your future, only you can act upon those decisions which places accountability on your goal. Creating a wish list gives us the “opt out” idea. It gives you permission to quit if it doesn’t pan out the way you had envisioned.
When you start taking hold of your future by creating a decision list then you immediately place more personal accountability on what you will do.
Let’s look at the definition of decide in the dictionary:
Definition of DECIDE:
To select as a course of action.
To induce to come to a choice.
Right off the bat it is clear that I am the one in charge of my own destiny. I will take action and I have made a choice. My choice is to act upon my decision to be the best version of who I am meant to be.
Fill in the blank based on what your 2018 Decision List is now:
In 2018, I make the DECISION to (fill in the blank)__________________________________________________.
Bam! You did it! You have taken the first step towards what you will achieve for yourself just by saying it out loud! You now “OWN” that decision and it is up to you to be intentional in how you attack it.
Just remember that the first step in achieving what you want begins with changing your mindset. Always play like the underdog. Get up each day and focus on your top two priorities for that day and this will get you one step closer to your Decision.
Call to Action:
- Be Honest with Yourself! When we are truly honest with ourselves we can begin to make change.
- Stop wishing and start deciding this year. What have you decided to do in 2018?
- Share your DECISIONS out loud and with others- personal accountability is key. No one is going to do it for you. You have to be ready and willing to make change in your life.
Take control of where you want to be in 2018. Remember that you will not reach success overnight. Growth is a consistent and ongoing process. The key is to keep moving forward and making progress which places you well ahead of 95% of the population!

7 年Kelly Merbler, this was absolutely fantastic article! I decided against resolutions this year, based mostly on things you addressed (they were wishes or hopes). What I chose instead were goals but after reading your article I really like decisions. Thank you for sharing this. And thanks Steve Solomita for commenting on this wonderful article so it could gain a larger reach.
