STOP Losing Federal Government Contracts

STOP Losing Federal Government Contracts

If you look around closely, you’ll see that government contracts aren't necessarily something new. In fact, the federal government spends billions annually on products and services from people like you and me.

But the question is, “What do you sell?” Well, to explain this I’m going to share a bit of Kimberly Kidd’s story - which by the way, around the time that I interviewed her, she’d won almost $2 MILLION in contracts. Kimberly’s Career Pivot?

Kimberly started in a corporate IT environment. She decided she was done with that particular career path and wanted to start her own company. However, she knew IT wasn't the right place to begin. It would have required certain set-asides and wasn't the route she wanted to take.

So what did Kimberly do? She did what many? people do - she went the path of least resistance, focusing on something low-risk. So, she ended up getting into HVAC.

Before Kimberly had $2 million in contracts, she made sure to be a prime contractor. In order for you to also be a prime contractor, you need to first register in SAM.gov. And you have to get a CAGE code. If you’re not active in SAM.gov, you can’t win an award. The last thing you want is to put all your time and energy into a proposal and you find out you can’t do it because you’re missing requirements.?

Finding Opportunities

Now, there are several ways to find contract opportunities:

Go to acquisition.gov and click on “forecast” at the bottom. You’ll see that you can take a look at all of the different opportunities that different agencies want to buy.

For example, if you're a service-disabled vet, go to the VA's website that focuses on business. There's a whole area for forecast, and it lists probably thousands of things that they're looking to buy. Legally, the VA must purchase from a service-disabled veteran-owned firm first.

Also, use your set-asides. Even if you are not certified as a woman-owned small business or economically disadvantaged women-owned small business, it doesn't mean that you can’t respond to those set-asides. You still can.?

A Word of Caution

Kimberly's success didn't come without challenges. Often, there's an upfront expense. If you're reselling batteries, for example, you need to figure out how to get them to places like Hawaii. Having a relationship with a small bank or credit union can be helpful for covering these costs.

Kimberly’s experience is a reminder that success in government contracting is possible. There are thousands of opportunities out there. Some organizations have set-asides that never get any bids.

This is a beautiful space to be in, with plenty of room for growth. So get out there and make it happen! And if you need more motivation, then subscribe to my official YouTube channel right now.?
