Stop Looking for Purpose

It's Monday and I hope everyone had a phenomenal weekend. We spent last week with Simon Davis and the incredible folks at Purposeful Intent in Scottsdale, AZ speaking at an event at the PGA TOUR Waste Management Inc. Phoenix Open. We talked about building an unbreakable culture and stronger teams and leaders.

The topic of "purpose" has been a hot one for years. One of the biggest misconceptions about purpose is that we "find" it. We don't actually find purpose, we CHOOSE it. This leads us to the 4th Bridge of Connection...

To thrive beyond fleeting victories, we must cross the deepest bridge of all – the Bridge of Purpose. Here we acknowledge that despite job titles or functions, our true compass lies in shared hopes, values, and human dignity.

This entails elevating human priorities over profits or metrics. It involves understanding that we all simply aspire to find meaning, contribute, feel secure, and grow. Our collective desire for fulfillment, joy, and community eclipses any roles we play.

Viewing others through this perspective transforms superficial "differences" into treasured diversity. Traits that once divided people, like gender, culture or creed, instead enrich when nested within common dreams. Each quality broadens worldview without diminishing inner light.

Our journey illuminates in proportion to embracing uniqueness within the whole. As purpose supersedes position, innovation opens beyond narrow interests to uplift everyone progressing together. Growth evolves from competition to collaborative harmony.

How to Choose Your Purpose

One of the most powerful exercises is crafting your own personal Purpose Statement. The way we encourage you to start this process is by gathering your "Flock of 5" Black Sheep Values? and activating them into a sentence. It works like this: My Flock of 5 are Creativity, Hope, Impact, Empathy, Connection and Authenticity. (I actually have 6;)

My Purpose Statement is "To creatively impact others by authentically providing hope." You can see the majority of my Black Sheep Values? in my actual purpose. This alignment of our WHAT (values) and our WHY (purpose) provides the ability to adapt and be resilient with HOW we choose to live it out.

This can be a difficult task for some. Be patient with yourself and permit yourself to work through dozens of bad statements until you find the perfect one. I'm always here to help if you get stuck.

This is the bedrock for building legacy, not ephemeral "wins." Crossing the deepest bridge to find our shared humanity catalyzes relentless improvement as one. Its fruits are enduring, outliving any single task. When purpose leads, our work builds a brighter future.

The road is long but takes shape step-by-step as we turn TOWARD one another instead of away.
