Stoic Quote of the Week
I judge you unfortunate because you have never lived through misfortune. You have passed through life without an opponent? no one can ever know what you are capable of, not even you. -Seneca
What I learned this week:
I’ll come right out and say it this week, the obstacle that you ignore is far worse than the obstacle you avoid. As business comes and goes, I tend to get or be comfortable with things as they are. We have X number of clients, and the business is doing Y in revenue. Feeling pretty good about things, even though, I know, that all things are on a timeline. I lived that world when I was the business development guy for government contracts. All government contracts come to an end, and they must be recompeted. I know that is the case with my clients because I am the one who created the agreement. The problem happens when we ignore the obvious. The fact that all things come to an end and will not continue indefinitely. After all, life is about change. Change comes whether we plan for it or not and time waits for no one. My thought for you this week is simple, don’t ignore the obvious or as one of my bosses taught me years ago, you can’t assume away the problem, in other words, ignoring the obstacle in front of you does not make it go away.
Planning thought of the week:
When things veer off your plan, whether it is a minor influence or a black swan event, it is time to take a tactical pause. A tactical pause is just a moment to stop and observe what is going on. In the Army when a serious incident would happen, we would do a safety stand-down. All training would stop, and we’d do a systems check and see where and if procedures and processes needed to change to prevent that incident from occurring again. When things feel like they are going off the rails, take a tactical pause and do a systems check for your business and life. Make the adjustments then move out again.

Business idea I heard about or thought of:
A friend of mine, Scott C., is running a book publishing and consulting business. What is different about what Scott is doing is the fact that he isn’t just looking for an author. Scott focuses on group writing and publishing which is a really cool idea and mitigates two of the biggest concerns that people have for writing a book. 1) How do find the time to write 50K words; and 2) It costs a lot of money to publish a book and market it. By pulling together a group of people to share in the writing load and cost, he practically eliminates those excuses. If you are interested in learning more about Project Publish, send me an email and I’ll connect you with Scott.

Veteran opportunity of the week:
I love this program! You know how big I am about being part of a tribe, especially for veterans. The Posse Veteran Program is that for vets looking to get their bachelor’s degree. I’ll give the program one more boost, one of their partner universities is Texas A&M. “The Posse Veterans Program identifies, trains, and supports veterans of the?U.S.?Armed Forces interested in pursuing bachelor’s degrees at top colleges and?universities.” Learn more and get your applications submitted here .
Someone I met this week:
I met Marc a handful of years ago at a networking event. I still laugh when I think about how he told me what he did, a recovering lawyer, ??. It had been a few years since Marc and I ended up at the same networking event, but that opportunity happened this week and it was like we hadn’t missed a beat. The funny thing is, Marc is back to lawyering and is one of the top lawyers for the cannabis industry and doing an amazing job.
