It takes one call to make a decision. Here's what I have followed and strongly believe will help: a. A discussion to learn the other side: Understand the candidate's perspective and motivations. b. Explain what you do and why you are hiring: Be clear about the impact they would have. c. Ask if they are open to an assignment: This helps gauge their commitment and skills. Use a simple scorecard with 1 to 5 criteria to evaluate and take an average with clear notes. If there are 10 discussions (interviews), the scorecard should help narrow down the candidates. The more people involved in the hiring process, the more complex it can get. Additionally, no interview should go without feedback. In my personal experience, I always inform candidates during the call whether they are shortlisted or not. I'd be happy to share what those five parameters that goes to the score board. - DM.
