Let’s be real for a moment—when most of us started our businesses, we weren’t thinking about becoming content creators. We were thinking about getting our businesses off the ground, managing clients, balancing budgets, and wearing way too many hats. Now here we are, learning platforms and trying to figure out how to generate awareness through social media. No one tells you how much showing up online matters until suddenly—it does.
Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones with a small marketing budget set aside. Or maybe, like so many small businesses, your funds are tight and every dollar counts. Either way, one truth remains: you still need to reach your potential customer somehow. Social media is the way in, and while it can seem daunting, it doesn't have to be.
Five Moves to Make Social Media Work for Your Business:
1. Share Your Story. Let’s start with the basics—tell people why you started. People love connecting with the story behind a business. Was it a passion? A gap in the market? An “I’ve got to take the leap” moment? Share your 'why' regularly and let your authenticity shine through.
2. Be Consistent (Even If It’s Not Every Day). Posting every day isn't always realistic for small business owners, but consistency is key. Find a schedule that works for you, even if it’s just three times a week. Over time, your audience will start expecting to hear from you, and that builds trust.
3. Engage, Don’t Just Broadcast. It’s called social media for a reason. Don’t just post and ghost—respond to comments, ask questions in your captions, and engage with your followers. The more conversations you spark, the more visibility you'll gain.
4. Educate and Entertain. Yes, you’ve got a product or service to sell, but give your audience value beyond that. Teach them something related to your business, share helpful tips, or entertain them with behind-the-scenes moments. This approach makes your content more relatable and memorable.
5. Call People to Action. Don’t be afraid to guide your audience to take the next step. Want them to visit your website? Ask them to. Want them to sign up for your newsletter? Let them know where to go. Whatever it is, make sure there’s always a CTA in your posts to help drive results.
