Stop focusing on follower count!

I have a colleague who has a legitimate business but who encountered a potential client that was questioning him on his follower count. "You don't have a lot of followers, why is that?" he would say. But what he should have been focused on is how much money he is making. That is the whole point of social media right?

My friend, who is a social media rockstar with regards to establishing an actual business, is completely not interested in working with this business owner who he could genuinely help. He was being unnecessarily difficult asking for extra stipulations in contracts and even going so far as to questioning his validity.

The man has over 40 people working in his company which is ample proof that what he does works and this difficult person is questioning him on his follower count even though he has over 50k followers. Doesn't it seem ludicrous that he is more focused on the importance of a follower account than the importance and proof of building an actual business?

Here's what matters the most; turning followers into actual paying clients. Engagement is also important. I can't even count the many social media influencers that have many followers but don't generate business. This is a real problem that no one is talking about; fake social media influencers that play to peoples opinions of follower counts. Again, don't pay attention to that. Pay attention to revenue, the real metric.
