Stop falling over please...

Stop falling over please...

Research has shown?that pain makes a fall?TWICE AS LIKELY!

We know that falls pose a massive problem to the NHS, it is widely reported that over 200,000 fall related emergency hospital admissions take place each year, recent reports show that over 4,000 falls take place in care homes each day and a further 700 each day during hospital inpatient stays. This contributes to the cost of around £6 million PER DAY to the NHS.

According to the British Geriatrics Society, frailty and reduced mobility, is associated with an increased risk of falls.

Research also shows that persistent pain is a risk factor for both the development of frailty and reduced mobility.

We also know that increased psychotropic medication such as antipsychotics or benzodiazepines used for Stress and distress are associated with up to 70% increased risk of falls,?due to their side effect profile they increase drowsiness, sedation and light-headedness.

It's is also reported that Increased use of opioid analgesics increases risk of falls, fall injuries and fractures amongst older adults.?

If we can manage pain in a timely and effective way, we can mitigate against these fall risk factors and have a significant positive impact on the cost to both the Care Sector and demand on an already stretched workforce.
