Stop "faking it 'til you make it"?!
We have multitudes within us.

Stop "faking it 'til you make it"!

Have you ever been told to "fake it 'til you make it"?

It's supposed to give you confidence... but it doesn't. It's supposed to help you grow... but it doesn't. It's supposed to show you the way... but it doesn't.

The One Thing is a newsletter I launched a few weeks ago that will help me bring my decades of experience stewarding people through massive moments of life and career growth. It's the One Thing you need to do, write, think, or ask that will help you get unstuck and achieve everything you've ever wanted.

So, before I tell you The One Thing, here's why this advice sucks: faking it builds a house (the new you!) on an insecure platform (the imagined state of others). We don't know what they are really doing, how they are really feeling, who they are really being. So we make it up, stab around in the dark, hope we get it right, all the while pretending to be someone we are not, and wondering why it just doesn't fit.

You know what fits? Being yourself.

But, yes, yes I know. You aren't where you want to be, you aren't as skilled as you want, you aren't as comfortable as you want.

So, here is my One Thing for you this week: you don't need an alter ego, you don't need to be someone else, you don't need to be anything you are not. All you have to do is find the you who you are when you are the very best version of you.

Who are you when you are the very best version of you?

It might be a moment when you crushed a deal, wooed the girl, helped a friend through a tough situation. Maybe you were on stage with an audience, maybe you were in a foxhole with your team, maybe you were all alone. It doesn't matter if it was public or private, quiet or loud. All that matters is that it was you at your very best.

This is what Robert E. Quinn wrote about in Harvard Business Review as your Fundamental State of Leadership, and rather than trying to be Beyonce, you just need to be you, this you, as much as you possibly can until that version of you becomes the you who shows up all the time.

Want to learn more about how to find your fundamental state of leadership? It's just one step in gaining more control in your life, and I give you that, and three others here .

Limitlessly yours, LGO

While I have uttered those words before, it means something different for me today. Oftentimes in my professional growth, it's not a matter of being my authentic self as much as it is building consistency and healthy habits, so in a sense that has become my new "fake it till I make it." I am still being me but at the same time I am forcing myself to be uncomfortable. I just finished another round of 75 Hard. I have made it a point to do this annually. For those who aren't aware it's following a diet with no cheat meals and no alcohol, 2 workouts a day and one has to be outside for a minimum of 45 minutes, a progress photo, a gallon of water, and 10 pages of a self help book. The skills I learned are perishable. It's not a matter of reaching the end of the 75 days as much as it is growing. Growth is not linear and faking it till I make it means doing what I need to do regardless of how I feel and what my mind tells me.

Laura Gassner Otting Great and needed advice. The last thing we need now are leaders faking anything: skills they don't have, visions that are meaningless, fake care and kindness for employees, fake honesty, and on and on. The presumption is that leaders who "fake it" are the only ones that know they are doing so. In reality, they are often the last ones to realize everyone else sees it as well.

If you can pause long enough - to disover that inner voice and light.. The rewards are beyond description.. You will be that rare person.. Authentic.. Inside of you is a rare light.. A piece of the original creative energy of God. You are an integral part of that.. Pure, you cannot be sullied.. Any stain.. is like the stain on a garmet The inner essence YOU.. cannot be stained. Go for long walks.. ask for help Talk to that inner you.. It is your absolute birthright.. The Torah says: "God is your Shadow" What does that mean? What does a shadow do? It follows your every move.. Shine Light up the world.. It is what you were born to do It is what your were made for.
