As an aspirational and a highly optimistic person we have all been at a point in our lives where we are waiting for that magical moment of inspiration to strike. There is so much that goes into thinking and dreaming about what we’re going to do and how we would achieve success. But in reality, there are more thoughts than actions taken. When we were young and probably with our parents or guardians, we had someone to wake us up, get us ready for school, help us with homework and just so much more… Then we grow up expecting someone will always come along to give us the push we need, and we end up waiting forever, until we realize that no one is coming.
I urge everyone and anyone to be able to take what you have and really double down on what you have before seeking more, we have to stop waiting and focus more on actions. They might be small steps, but nevertheless they are progress. Starting a new project or chasing your dreams can feel overwhelming. The key is to break it down into manageable pieces. Instead of focusing on the entire mountain you need to climb, concentrate on taking the first step.
Smaller steps can help build momentum and can really help you find your fuel to your motivation. Because each step forward provides the confidence that one needs to keep going onto the next step. In a fast-paced world where of course there is a lot of competition there are millions of things to get you overwhelmed with, and in order to reduce that feeling taking your bigger goals into smaller tasks will be the way forward. Smaller the task the less intimidating they seem. For example: if you had a goal to climb Mount Everest, when getting closer to starting the bigger that mountain seems and as you stand at its feet it is probably the biggest version of it you are going to ever see. But understand this unless you take that first step climbing that mountain will always just be a dream or an imagination.
When moving one step at a time we are often greeted with micro failures and those trips and falls lead to rising stronger with more awareness about the next step. Just as we keep focusing on breaking down bigger task it is equally important to be consistent. Consistency provides the ability to form a habit and to form a mindset to never give up when moving towards your goals. We can be doing all the things in the world and keeping ourselves so busy with multiple tasks at hand, but not having consistency will only help you settle for a mediocre life. I am sure you know the feeling of hitting the gym and then the interest fizzling out and trying to start again; once you stop it becomes so difficult to get back into that routine. But when you push through and stay consistent in getting to the gym, then promptly focusing on the next thing such as warming up, then working out that approach with one step at a time and consistency become a formidable force to reaching your goal of being fit. ?
You know, as humans we really need competition to survive. Yes, life is a journey that you are not in a race with anyone else but you. On the other hand, competition is a “must-have” in order to really focus on giving your best every day. Just like athletes and teams when fighting for tough spots within a team. You end up always getting the best out of the players because there is someone training just as hard to take it all away from you. So, in life, the same principle applies so, work on your dreams and goals as if someone out there is working just as hard to take it all aways from you. Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Waiting until everything is perfect is just another form of procrastination. Therefore, aim for progress, not perfection. Understand that your mistakes and failures are part of your journey, they are valuable learning opportunities for you to learn and grow.
Chasing perfectionism has been such a waste of time in my personal experience. What I have found to work for me has been to set realistic goals which contain achievable milestones to keep myself on track. There is always an overarching goal and vision for my project or business, but realistically the milestones keep me progressing and improving day by day. As humans we are very capable to adapt and move on from setbacks, nothing is ever going to go as per plans but rising up above those challenges will and celebrating small successes should keep you from progressing. Ultimately it all relies on you to get up and start doing the work that is needed, no one is ever going to come pat your back and tell you good job or to something. You’re going to have to get things done by yourself.
