Stop Chasing Jobs!!

Stop Chasing Jobs!!

In good old days, searching for a job used to be a one-time activity and it was lot easier to get an offer within a few weeks with reasonable amount of effort. Today getting a job offer is equivalent to winning a lottery.

Rapid adoption of automation, diluting standards in education and cut-throat competition among businesses have changed the dynamics of talent demand and supply. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see 500-1000 resumes within 24 hours after a job is posted online. As a result, 70-80% of executive-level jobs are not advertised commonly known as hidden jobs.

The job market has divided into what I call the red ocean and blue ocean of job market. Red ocean is the job market where few jobs are posted and chased by thousands of job seekers. Hiring managers and recruiters are overwhelmed and run away from job seekers.

Contrary to this, there is a blue ocean of job market where all the hidden jobs are available. There is much less competition as employers do not want to post these jobs publicly and mainly rely on word of mouth or internal referrals.

For an average job seeker, this hidden job market is not reachable. It is only accessible to those professionals who have a high quality of wide professional network, a strong personal brand and enjoy a solid reputation by demonstrating their talent through their day-to-day communication and interaction.

Unfortunately, most job seekers start their job search when it is already too late. You need to dig your well before you are thirsty. Times have changed. Job search is no more about one-time activity. According to experts, today an average professional is expected to make 10-12 job changes over their career lifetime. It’s no more about job search. It is about your ongoing personal marketing strategy.

Remove the hat of a job seeker. Whether you are happily employed or in panic to be fired or depressed in transition, please understand, you are an entrepreneur in the business of selling your talent. You have only two functions; keep developing your talent and keep marketing it.

This Saturday, I shall be conducting a free live career strategy workshop, where I will help you redefine, rebrand and reposition your talent. World treats you the way you define yourself. You are worth more than what you have accepted. It all starts with believing in yourself. Trust me, the world will follow you.
