Stop Buying Awards !!!
In the recent past, I have seen a lot of frivolous companies/bodies/congress, which kind of manufacture & easily distribute awards, based on a hefty amount charged as “Nomination Fees” and then doles out an award to every Tom, Dick and Harry (all nominees).
Most of the nominees (award buyers) know such outfits and how they function, but yet for need of illusionary glory, buy such awards, which are given at 5 star hotels/profit making seminars. Some individuals influence their companies to sponsor such events, so that “they” can win “An Award”. (That is the Deal!!!)
The Illusion of Purchased Prestige: Why Buying Awards Damages Your Brand
In today’s hyper-competitive market, businesses and individuals alike are constantly seeking ways to stand out. One seemingly easy route to bolster reputation is by acquiring awards. While earning recognition through genuine achievements is commendable, a concerning trend has emerged: buying awards from dubious sources solely to gain popularity. This practice not only undermines the credibility of the award itself but also tarnishes the reputation of those who engage in it.
The Devaluation of Authentic Recognition
Awards are traditionally seen as symbols of excellence, earned through hard work, innovation, and genuine contributions to a field. They carry weight because they are supposed to be bestowed after rigorous evaluation by reputable authorities. When awards are purchased, however, this entire process is bypassed, reducing the award to a mere commodity that anyone can buy.
This devaluation harms not only the individual or business that buys the award but also those who have genuinely earned similar accolades. In a world where every other person seems to be a “best in class” or “top in industry” or “most admired” or “most respected”, ?the significance of such titles erodes. When people discover that awards can be bought, they begin to question the legitimacy of all awards, making it harder for genuinely deserving entities to receive the recognition they deserve.
The Ethical Fix
Beyond the devaluation of awards, purchasing recognition poses significant ethical concerns. This practice reflects a willingness to engage in deceptive behaviour, presenting oneself as more accomplished than they truly are. While this might provide a temporary boost in reputation, it is a fragile facade that can easily crumble.
In the age of social media and rapid information dissemination, the truth tends to surface sooner or later. Once it is revealed that an award was purchased rather than earned, the damage to one’s credibility can be irreparable. Consumers, clients, and peers are likely to view such behaviour as dishonest, leading to a loss of trust that can be incredibly difficult to rebuild.
The Cost of Short-Term Popularity
Buying awards might seem like a shortcut to success, but the reality is far from it. The initial boost in popularity may be appealing, but it often comes at a steep cost. Brands and individuals who rely on purchased recognition instead of focusing on genuine achievements are building their reputation on shaky ground.
When the foundation of a brand is built on inauthenticity, it is only a matter of time before it begins to crumble. Customers are increasingly discerning, and they value transparency and honesty. They are also quick to spot inconsistencies. A brand that boasts about awards that were not rightfully earned may find itself in a public relations crisis when the truth emerges.

Moreover, competitors and industry insiders are often aware of which awards are legitimate and which are not. Being associated with the latter can lead to a loss of respect within one’s professional community. In the long run, this can hinder career advancement, business opportunities, and collaborations.
The Value of Genuine Achievement
Instead of spending time and resources on buying/sponsored awards, individuals and businesses should focus on genuine achievements. Real success stories, backed by hard work, innovation, and ethical practices, resonate far more with audiences than any purchased accolade ever could.
Investing in quality, service, and customer satisfaction will eventually lead to organic recognition. When an award is earned through merit, it not only brings true prestige but also strengthens the brand's reputation in a way that is sustainable and enduring.
The Path Forward: Building a Legacy of Integrity
The temptation to buy awards in a bid for quick fame is understandable in a world that often glorifies success. However, the risks and long-term consequences far outweigh any perceived benefits. Brands and individuals should aim to build their legacy on integrity, authenticity, and genuine accomplishments.
A legacy built on true merit is one that withstands the test of time. It fosters trust, attracts loyal customers, and earns the respect of peers and competitors alike. In contrast, a reputation built on purchased accolades is nothing more than a house of cards, vulnerable to collapse at any moment.
My thoughts
In a society that often measures success by the number of awards and recognitions, it is crucial to remember that true prestige cannot be bought. Awards that are earned, not purchased, carry a value that transcends mere popularity. They reflect real achievement, dedication, and excellence.
By rejecting the practice of buying awards and instead focusing on genuine contributions to your field, you are investing in a reputation that will endure. The road to true success may be longer and more challenging, but it is infinitely more rewarding. In the end, it is the legacy of integrity and authentic accomplishment that will set you apart in a world filled with hollow accolades.
