Stop Brainstorming! Use Structured Ideation Instead

Stop Brainstorming! Use Structured Ideation Instead

In the Harvard Business Review article "Why Group Brainstorming Is a Waste of Time" (https://bit.ly/3L0ihZI), Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic gives 4 reasons why brainstorming isn't effective:

1.????Social loafing

2.????Social anxiety

3.????Regression to the mean

4.????Production blocking

In the UX Strategy Workshop (https://bit.ly/3ukjSDT) I will be teaching in major UX cities this year, we will explore numerous alternatives you can use for more structured product feature ideation and prioritization sessions. Some of the methods are related to brainstorming, but are more rational and prescriptive.

The structured ideation methods I'm considering are:

·??????Experience Mapping

·??????Futurecasting

·??????Jobs to be Done

·??????Moments That Matter

·??????Ishikawa Diagram

·??????Challenge Assumptions

·??????Zoom In, Zoom Out

·??????Brainwriting

·??????Mind Mapping

·??????Five Why's

·??????10 + 10

·??????Analogy

·??????Scamper

·??????Crazy 8's

·??????Mash Up

·??????Round Robin

·??????Mission Impossible

·??????Worst Idea, Negative Brainstorming

·??????Gamestorming

·??????Bodystorming

·?????Scenario Planning

?The structured prioritization methods I'm considering are:

·??????Decision Matrix (independent business, customer, tech vectors)

·??????Jobs to be Done

·?????MoSCoW

·?????Kano

·?????Synectics

·?????RICE

If you are in a UX hub city and you want to host the workshop, get in touch! If you have any suggestions that I didn't list here, please suggest in the comments for the article or post where you found this. Thanks!

I agree with Will Borici. These are various implementations and expressions of Brainstorming, although I have always grasped the ambiguity it internally creates in me every time I use it. This stems from my understanding (rather not understanding) of its actual meaning and etymology. Perhaps, Osborn should have "brainstormed" for a better word ??.
