Remember high school? (And here I’m dating myself.) Back then, the cool kids all wore the same brand of clothes. It was a badge of belonging. If you wanted to fit in, you followed the unspoken dress code.
But in business, blending in doesn’t make you cool — it makes you forgettable.
Yet, I see so many professionals doing just that. They think sounding like everyone else in their field proves their credibility. By using the same industry jargon and highlighting the same credentials, they’ll be taken seriously.
But here’s the problem: If you sound like everyone else, why should anyone choose you?
You may believe your credentials distinguish you, but simply listing them is like rattling off the ingredients for a delicious meal. Without savoring it, what’s the benefit?
People don’t care about your resume. They care about what you can do for them.
Take life coaches, for example. One says, “I help you live your best life and find your purpose.” Sounds nice, but it’s vague and could apply to thousands of other coaches.
Another says, “I help women in corporate careers navigate burnout and transition into fulfilling consulting roles.” Now that’s clear. The second coach has obvious benefits—she speaks to a specific pain point and offers a concrete solution.

So, what’s your secret sauce?
That’s what makes you different. That’s what makes you stand out. And that’s what makes people choose you over the competition.
