Stop blaming yourself - how better tools can transform your work and home life

This piece will resonate with those of you who blame yourselves if something you're doing isn't getting good results or if you are having a tough time in the process.

The other day I was struggling to clean a really stubborn stain at home and I got quite frustrated with both the process and myself for not being able to do it. Then, I reached for a different cleaning brush and I got rid of it in seconds! Easy peasy.

You see, it wasn't me or my incompetence that was the problem, I just wasn't using the right tools.

Now of course, sometimes it is me!?Sometimes, I need to up my skills and capability especially if I'm doing something new and I'm still learning. And of course there may be many other variables at play in all sorts of situations.

But the purpose of this message is to encourage you to consider that maybe it's not you, it's the tools you're using. Or, not using.

You may have heard the timeless adage: before chopping down a tree, first sharpen your axe.

I'm sure that many of our frustrations at work and at home are because we are using the wrong tools, or the tools are not fit for purpose. And, because this makes the process hard and gives us bad results, we can fall into the trap of thinking we're doing something wrong, which really knocks our self confidence too.

On top of that, if we don't realise that we have the wrong tools, processes and resources, we default to thinking that people are the problem and we try to fix and improve them, instead of dealing with the real root cause.

If this resonates with you, perhaps take some time to reflect on the quality of your tool kit. You could do this alone, with your family, your team or, across your whole company.

Think about the main things you're doing and in particular focus on the ones you find frustrating or those that don't give you great results over and over again. And then consider: what tools might help? If you don't know what tools exist, use a tool! Google and AI for example.

Once you find and implement better tools and resources, this will improve your process, your results AND your self confidence because you'll realise that it was never about you to begin with.

Also, I'd love for you to imagine what you could accomplish when you do have the right resources?

How much higher could you reach? How much calmer could you be? How much progress, creativity and enjoyment could you experience and achieve by having the right tools at your fingertips?

Have a think about that. And let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Catalyst Care Group: The course was absolutely brilliant, so much to learn and practical tools to use in a different scenarios, Pinky took a coaching approach which was really supportive rather than being prescriptive. Discussions were realistic and very applicable to the world we live in rather than just being theoretical.

Dacorum Borough: Having recently returned to work, I was anxious about interacting with ‘strangers’ however Pinky’s knowledge and passion for the topic made the session a naturally safe space and provided a better understanding about becoming ‘more resilient and provided us with some great new tools for our resilience armoury, that we can also share with our teams/families
