If you’re a giant thinker with big dreams of success, you are probably really frustrated if you’re not succeeding right now. You might be blaming others, looking at the politicians and blaming them. You see others achieving greatness and think to yourself, why am I not doing that? The people who are experiencing massive success are not smarter than you. They aren’t working harder than you. So why them and not you? Maybe you are an artist and can sell your work, but you know you should be recognized internationally—or you have a net worth of $700,000 but know you should have $70 million. You have the dream and the talent, but feel unsettled because you know you can be doing more.
This is a good thing. If you’re not satisfied with any success you achieve, great. You hate when people tell you how good you are doing when you know your potential is much higher? Super. Do you often feel like you don’t fit in? Perfect. You’ve seen enough of others who are no smarter than you bring ideas to the marketplace and become millionaires and billionaires. Stop blaming others, stop blaming politicians, the government, the economy, or anyone else.
I’m guessing you are in 1 of 3 different positions today:
1. You got off track from pursuing your huge dreams because society taught you that your plans were too unlikely or way too audacious. As a result, you’ve toned down your message and belief over the years, buying into the concept that obsession isn’t healthy. Maybe you’ve been conditioned to fit inside a box instead of breaking out of one—and you’re trading in all your dreams of greatness for a cute little house, a 401(k), and a 90-minute commute.
Business ideas that used to keep you up during the night have been shelved in favor of weekends on the couch watching TV. You’re not lazy; it’s that you’ve been told so many times by your friends and family that this obsession of yours is unhealthy, that your dreams aren’t attainable, and you’ve bought it.
"Never allow anyone to tell you how well you are doing when you know you can do more."
2. You’ve got a vision for your success but need validation that will serve as additional fuel for your success explosion. You’re on track but not operating as quickly or as well as you could be in becoming a big winner. You know for sure that you have to be fanatical to have any remote chance at making your big dreams a reality. All eighty billion cells in your body are consumed with the idea of having massive success; now you need to figure out how to make it happen.
3. You’ve never heard until now that it’s okay to be the obsessive freak you always wished you could be. Maybe you’re a person who knows in the back of their mind that obsession isn’t a bad thing but you’re just not living it yet. You realize how far you’ve moved away from a powerful force that you wish could be reawakened within you. Maybe you never knew that obsession was a valid option, let alone the only option.
Understand that only you are responsible for your success. Only you can settle for less. Billions of people live below their potential and if you are one of them, people may have sympathy for your lack of success, but ultimately nobody is going to feel sorry for you or help you. The obsessed embrace the fact that they—and only they—are responsible for their success.
For me success isn’t about one thing, one achievement, one dream, or one goal. I’ve always wanted a lot of things. I want my cake and to eat it too. Why would I want my cake if I couldn’t eat it? You too should want many things, not just one thing. Get great at a bunch of things. I don’t want to just be rich—I want it all: family, love, community, health, and time to enjoy it all.
"Those who are truly obsessed are willing to persist when it no longer makes sense."
Don’t settle for one color of the rainbow when you can have the whole thing. Get obsessed today with getting what you want out of life. Don’t underestimate your potential. Admit that you want it all. You deserve to have it all—why wouldn’t you? Others have it. You are just as capable. End the epidemic of average and remember that you are the only one who has your dreams.
