Stop Avoiding Feedback

Stop Avoiding Feedback

Effective leadership hinges on the ability to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement. At the heart of that culture lies the art of giving and receiving feedback.?

As a thought leader in leadership and technology, I've observed firsthand how mastering feedback can transform individuals, teams, and entire organisations.

We live in an era of unprecedented change. Technology disrupts industries, and the pace of innovation demands constant adaptation. In this environment, leaders can't rely solely on traditional control mechanisms.?

We need diverse perspectives, accurate information, and the ability to course-correct in real time. This is where feedback becomes indispensable.

Building a Framework for Effective Feedback

When we look at how to give and receive high-quality feedback, there are several frameworks teams can explore and implement including "Radical Candor" and "Thanks for the Feedback."?

These frameworks emphasise the importance of understanding the different types of feedback:

Appreciation: Acknowledging effort and performance.

Coaching: Guiding someone toward improvement.

Evaluation: Providing a clear understanding of where someone stands.

The optimal mix of these types varies depending on the individual and the situation. As leaders, we must learn to tailor our approach to meet the specific needs of our team members.

The Human Element of Timing and Empathy

Beyond frameworks, the human element of feedback is crucial. Just because you are ready to give someone feedback doesn’t mean they are ready to receive it. This underscores the importance of timing and empathy.

LeeAnn Renninger's TED Talk emphasises the value of giving people control over the delivery of feedback. By asking, "Do you have time to talk about how that last presentation went?" we empower individuals and create a more receptive environment.

Leveraging Technology for Growth

In the Age of Smart Intelligence, we have access to a wealth of tools and resources that can enhance our feedback practices. Online courses, videos, and digital platforms can provide valuable insights and facilitate continuous learning. Furthermore, technology can help track and analyse feedback, providing data-driven insights for improvement.

New Leaders, New Challenges

Giving performance feedback can be particularly stressful for new leaders. The fear of damaging relationships or triggering defensive reactions is understandable. However, by adopting a thoughtful and strategic approach, leaders can transform feedback from a source of anxiety to a catalyst for growth.

Key Strategies for Thoughtful Feedback

  1. Continuously learn and refine your feedback techniques.
  2. Ensure your intentions are genuinely aimed at helping others improve.
  3. Choose the Right Time and Setting
  4. Focus on task-related processes, not personal abilities.
  5. Appreciate the courage and vulnerability of those who provide feedback.

Reflective Questions for Leaders

  • How can I create a culture of psychological safety where feedback is welcomed and valued?
  • What frameworks and techniques can I implement to improve my feedback delivery?
  • How well do I receive feedback myself, and what can I do to improve?
  • How can I better train my team to give and receive feedback effectively?

By embracing the art and science of feedback, leaders can unlock the potential of their teams and drive continuous improvement in the ever-evolving landscape of technology and leadership.
