My friends at Linkedin aren't going to like this article ... but I'm writing this for job seekers, not for Linkedin.
Linkedin wants you to think you can use your profile as a modern replacement for resumes. In reality, your Linkedin profile is about as useful for job applications as a paper resume that you took to Kinko's to print.
Here's why you never want to apply for a job using your Linkedin profile instead of a resume:
- Can't Customize To Meet Employer Needs: You can't customize your Linkedin profile for an individual reader - If you customize for one, it's what all viewers see. But if you're not investing significant time customizing your resume to an individual hiring manager's needs, you aren't even trying. Recruiters, HR reps, and hiring managers can clearly see you aren't trying and screen you out (even if you get past the ATS). There's even a term for sending out a high volume of uncustomized resumes - Spray And Pray ... and it doesn't work.
- Not ATS Friendly: Your Linkedin profile won't load into most Applicant Tracking Systems like a resume - It's not compatible. While I'm all for helping you avoid ATSs, making your resume incompatible with ATSs is a terrible way to do it. It will delay your application (sometimes by weeks), risk that information will be incorrectly loaded into the ATS (making you unfindable), and some employers will just reject you outright when you apply with a Linkedin profile.
Fortunately, there are more effective ways to apply for jobs that can speed your search, get you more interviews, and land an offer more quickly.
Why not let me show you how to job search more effectively? I'll can teach you how to change your resume/job search strategy to accelerate your search. While we're at it, I can show you how to turnaround a failing job search, making it so fast that you can beat unemployment quickly.
This is the 3rd recession I've recruited/coached through, so I've seen first hand what resume and job search strategies succeed for job seekers during recessions. I've also seen mistakes candidates make, causing their recession job searches to fail. I've been through this before and know what works and what doesn't.
That's why numerous job seekers who work with me have already gotten job offers this March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February, March, and April - every week since mid-March 2020.
As a top national recruiter who reads hundreds of resumes per day, who has helped hundreds of thousands of candidates in their job search, and seen thousands of employers' job search processes from the inside, I've got a different perspective than most career coaches.
I see that most job seekers do essentially the same things, even when they think they are job searching differently. I also see most job seekers were taught search methods that eliminate them from consideration, because they conflict with the employer's hiring process.
But I've been teaching job seekers to accelerate their job searches for 13+ years by using non-traditional resume/job search strategies that demonstrate impact rather than just being average. I'll show you how to accelerate your job search so you can find a job fast by understanding employers' point of view and hiring processes ... and using this understanding to beat your competition.
(I'm not just a career coach. I've also been a top national recruiter for the last 16+ years ... so you'll get advice from an insider's point of view.)
Let me show you what you can do now to change your job search and resume so you can find a job fast, even if you're between jobs, over 40, trying to change careers/industry/location, if your industry is in decline/consolidation, trying to overcome long term career gaps, family leave, find a remote job, turnaround your job search or other tough to solve job search problems.
