STONE JUMP CEREMONY, NIAS – 3&4 NOV 2017

How to convince people that you are an adult now? Smoking? Get a job? Not really surprising. People do that. But, how about a unique way like high stone jumping? Yup, youth in Nias-North Sumatera will definitely do that. Also, the stone must be as high as 2 feet and as thick as 16 inch!

Once during local wars, young troops who could jump over the other tribe’s stone fortress would be considered as the war winner. Today, when a group of young boys in Nias is ready to show their maturity, there will be a sacred stone jumping ceremony to hold called "Fahombo Batu". Indeed, it's a matter of pride for families when their sons succeed on this ceremony.

However, jumping over stone is not that easy. They are not allowed to touch the stone and it is very risky. If they fail, they could end up in the hospital with broken legs.

Now, stone jump ceremony becomes one of tourist attractions in Nias. The ceremony does not only show the tourists how amazing their youth are, but also some traditional dances and other local cultures that will fascinate your holiday so much.
