Stock Picking
One of my hobbies over the years has been picking stocks. Being in the financial services industry has afforded me the opportunity to work with companies and learn the ins and outs of business and garner the knack of reading and understanding financial statements. Individual investors have an edge, in my opinion, over the heard mentality found in institutions. This can really work to your advantage as a stock picker. For the last eight years in a row I have beat the S & P 500 averages...which is not easily done. Here are a few tips that have worked for me:
- Maintain a small portfolio...less than 10 stocks.
- Build a "watch" list of stocks to choose from...by industry category...and follow it for months before you pick.
- Focus on companies that are leaders in their field.
- Buy when everyone else is selling.
- Take your time...stock picking is akin to watching paint dry.
- Dollar cost average your picks...buy some now...some later...be methodical.
- Generally pick to hold forever.
