Stock Monkey - My First REACT App
If you want a place to look up stock prices, without the annoyance of having to specify to Google that all you want is the quote, you've come to the right place.
Stock Monkey is a one stop shop for checking real-time stock prices. Without the hassle of telling your search engine that the seemingly meaningless string of letters you just typed was in fact the ticker symbol of your largest position -- "Showing results for Dog Prices?" -- No, I wanted DDOG's price, I heard they beat earnings!
The only things on the page are a header and search form. Cause' that's all you really need. Plus, no more caps lock, because Stock Monkey's got it on lock. No cap. Just type in any stock ticker (symbol) listed on the NASDAQ or NYSE and Stock Monkey switches your letters toUpperCase before pulling the quote from...

Features
The only visible feature on the app is a search form; that includes an input field and a button. On the backend side of things, I used the Finnhub API to pull quotes. It seems simple, but it was exactly what I wanted to accomplish. Although, if I had more time, I would have liked to also display volume and perhaps a graph.
Inspiration
I got the idea to create Stock Monkey because I wanted to take the middleman out of the equation when looking up quotes. Instead of having to specify to Google that some obscure OTC ticker is not gibberish and, in fact, a stock that you actually own, when you look up a price using Stock Monkey, it runs it straight through the API.

Code - gitHub
I used just React and CSS to write Stock Monkey...
React -- I only had two components on the JS side of things. One for the form where I had all of the logic working behind the scenes with the API, and one for the header.
CSS -- Styling is not really my thing, so I may have to go back and rework some of the visuals when I have the time.
Highs and Lows
I enjoyed the logic side of things as usual, but had a hard time getting the style just right. Curse of being a semi-perfectionist, I guess. It also felt really good to see the app work after struggling over the from code for a while.
Future Features
I would like to have autofill on the search form, but I had trouble locating a good JSON file for stocks. I might end up making my own with just Company Name -- Ticker/Symbol included. But that might be far in the future. Who knows?
