This year, SCaLE 14x attendees will have the opportunity to hear Anothony Chow speak on how to start contributing to OpenStack. Well if you are unable to make it probably one of the better ways to start is "not just install openstack" but "use openstack". Lately I have been using openstack regularly on CentOS.
One possible way you can start contributing is by filling bugs, RFEs. Don't stop here! pick one of the easier (less critical) bug and try fixing it, I know it is easier said than done! Well not really, all you have to do is ask for help here or participate on IRC chat. Rich Bowen from Red Hat had written a guide on how to start contributing, I would encourage you to start making use of it.
One of the better ways to start using OpenStack is getting started with DevStack. I am sure there are plenty of articles/blogs talking about the process etc and I prefer not to bore you with details. Spin up a VM with CentOS 7 (fresh install) and lookup for steps here [just replace "apt-get" with "yum" that's really about it, rest of the process is absolutely identical].
Now if you have already taken strive to use OpenStack, join the community and I am sure if you are already an OpenStack user you wouldn't need my invitation to join the community. It really offers a strong ecosystem, and users seeking commercial support can choose from different OpenStack-powered products and services in the Marketplace.
Still if you are thinking Why OpenStack ? Well the answer is here and Thousands of world's leading brands rely on OpenStack to run their businesses every day, reducing costs and helping them move faster. Well if you like Executive Summaries or Business Perspective! You may consider reading the OpenStack Booklet.
