STILL not convinced by social media? These 3 top tips might help...

It actually surprises...no..SHOCKS me...when I meet people in this day and age who are still not convinced on the benefits of social media!

On a personal level, I've lost count of the amount of business I've received through social media to date - whether it's direct invitations to give career talks via Twitter, CV makeover requests via Facebook, or simple connections made on LinkedIn which later open the door to new and exciting opportunities I wouldn't have had access to otherwise.

Social media to me is by far the best thing to have emerged from our advancement as a human race in the last ten years or so. Okay, slight exaggeration aside, social media is pretty hot and when used correctly it's an excellent tool for business owners and it can also serve the savvy jobseeker well.

3 top tips for using social media effectively

In honour of the sixth annual Social Media Day, which took place just a few days ago on the 30th of June, here are my three top tips for using social media effectively in your business or career (all of which can be found in my book, The Science of Successful Job Hunting *plug, plug*):

1) Have a good profile picture

A picture says a thousand words, as the saying goes, so don't even entertain the idea of using a logo or some other image as your profile picture. People connect with people, not logos!

2) Be consistent with your brand

Even if you don't know it, you ARE a brand and your brand is saying something ALL the time. It's important that you're consistent and communicate the same brand message on your LinkedIn as you do on your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or whatever other social media you fancy. This goes for both pictures and words.

3) Be social

The biggest clue to using social media effectively is hidden in its name - "SOCIAL" media. It's not called "marketing" media, neither is it called "take-all-you-can-and-give-nothing-back" media. If you want the best results on social media, be social - that's as simple as it is.

If you're apply these three top tips and you still remain unconvinced by the benefits of social media, give me a call!*

*(Errr...disclaimer: Don't actually give me a call...unless you're enquiring about a LinkedIn profile makeover or you'd like me to run a social media workshop for your organisation or event, in which case you can contact me here.)

Yes, fun is definitely important Kate! And you're right about the arguments - some people are far more confrontational online than they are in "real" life!

Thanks Mildred, good tips. I'd add "have fun" and maybe, "don't be tempted into arguments".
