Is mental health just a trending topic, or are we truly breaking the stigma?
Let’s dive into the difference between awareness and depth in mental health support
Mental health has come a long way from being a hidden issue.
Today, more people are openly discussing it, reducing stigma, and encouraging one another.
But with mental health now a popular topic, there’s a risk of it becoming a trend rather than a serious commitment to well-being.
In a recent LinkedIn audio event, I explored this topic, focusing on raising basic mental health awareness among those who may lack formal education or easy access to mental health resources. Here are some insights we discussed.
The Shift in Mental Health Conversations ??
Increased visibility has made mental health more accepted and less stigmatized, which is a positive change. However, treating it as a social trend can trivialize the issues people face.
Through my current work as a Counselor, OCD Therapist, General Physician, and previously mental health leader at serious mental illness rehabilitation institution I’ve seen firsthand that mental health is not a quick fix or lifestyle choice—it’s a critical part of well-being that requires attention and understanding.
Here’s a closer look at some challenges when mental health becomes more about appearances than actual support.
1. Surface-Level Engagement ??
Social media has made it easy to share mental health messages, but there’s a difference between raising awareness and engaging deeply. True support takes time, consistency, and often guidance from professionals. If we treat mental health like any other trend, we risk overlooking the genuine support many people need.
2. Romanticizing Struggles ??
With mental health now discussed more openly, there’s also a risk of glamorizing issues like anxiety or depression. While it’s important to understand these conditions, they aren’t “lifestyle” choices but serious challenges. Romanticizing them can make it harder for those who struggle in ways that aren’t as visible or easy to share.
3. Misusing Diagnoses and Labels ??
Terms like “OCD” or “depression” are often used casually online, sometimes without a full understanding of their significance. Self-diagnosing or using these labels too freely can undermine the real experiences of people with these conditions. Professional diagnosis and support remain essential, especially for complex issues that require careful management.
4. How Trendiness Can Undermine True Support ??
When mental health is treated lightly, it can discourage people from seeking real support, thinking they should be able to manage on their own. But mental health challenges are often complex and need more than quick solutions. If awareness doesn’t go deeper, those who genuinely need help might not get the encouragement to seek it.
Reaching All Communities with Respectful Mental Health Awareness ??
For mental health awareness to be effective, it must be accessible to everyone, including those with limited education or in underserved areas. In our event, we discussed how mental health should be presented in simple, understandable ways that respect people’s diverse backgrounds and experiences. This approach helps ensure that awareness isn’t just another trend but a lasting resource for all.
Moving Forward: Approaching Mental Health with Respect ??
To create a society where mental health is truly supported, we need to foster a culture that goes beyond slogans and labels. Here are some key steps:
Encourage Deeper Understanding:
Mental health awareness should involve education and empathy, not just quick tips.
Support for All Types of Experiences:
Everyone’s mental health journey is different, so we should create spaces that welcome all kinds of struggles and experiences.
Promote Professional Help:
Seek guidance from mental health professionals when needed, and value the role they play in offering personalized support.

Mental health isn’t just a trend to follow or a label to adopt; it’s a crucial part of our overall well-being. As mental health advocates, we need to go beyond surface-level engagement to make a real difference, especially for communities that may lack access to resources or education on these topics. Let’s stay committed to creating lasting change by offering understanding, support, and respect for everyone’s journey.
If you believe in supporting mental health in a meaningful way, I encourage you to share this article and join the conversation.
Your voice can help create a community that truly values mental health. Together, let’s break the stigma, foster understanding, and inspire genuine support for all. ????

4 天前Such an insightful analysis of a growing challenge. I'm a professor in the US (with ties to Pakistan through the Fulbright program and a Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund grant) who sees many students suffering from anxiety and depression. At times I worry that they are being rewarded on social media for their (legitimate) anxiety symptoms and are getting gratification from these "likes" rather than getting fulfillment from finding a more expansive life that isn't ruled by their mental health concerns. I know the reality isn't an either/or situation, but this piece looks at this dilemma with compassion and discernment. Very glad it showed up in my feed. Jim Robinson
