Steve Job's Top 10 Rules for?Success You Can Apply to Your Life

I've always found inspiration in people that are the best at what they do.

One of my core guiding beliefs is if you want to be good at something, go to the best and learn from them.

Im always learning from the best from books, YouTube, podcasts, Medium, LinkedIn, and other sources.?

For this newsletter, I want to profile the late Steve Jobs, the Co-Founder of Apple, and present his top 10 rules for success.

He may be gone now (died in 2011) but his legacy is very much alive and many people will forever associate the Apple brand with Jobs.?

I've never owned an Apple product myself but I highly respect the man behind the brand. Jobs was a great visionary with a deep fire in his belly and all of us can learn from him.

We can learn lessons on life, love, passion, business, and more from him.

Without further ado, here are Steve Jobs' top 10 rules for success that you can apply to both your professional and personal life:

Rule 1#

Dont live a limited?life

This is essentially not accepting the status quo of what everyone else does. No matter who you are, and where you are in life you have the power to change your life, influence it, and mold it to be what you want it to be. You can live a life by design, not by default. Most of the human population live by the latter but you dont need to follow them. Break away from the pack and live on your terms.

Rule 2#

Have passion

Dont underestimate the power of passion for your work and life. I know it's become a bit cliche these days as you hear it everywhere. But the truth is passion is what enables you to keep going when the going gets tough. Without it it's just too easy to give up, to quit, to throw in the towel. In addition, passion makes life more exciting. It adds spice and variety to your life and ignites the fire in your belly.

Rule 3#?

Design for?yourself

When designing a product design it as if you're designing it for yourself. Engage with it, play with it, etc as you would for yourself. This can be applied to the services you offer and even the way you live your life. Jobs spoke about owning your dreams and building momentum for yourself. Be inner guided first not outer guided.

Rule 4#

Dont sell?crap

When giving advice to Nike on growing their business and brand Steve Jobs reportedly told them “dont sell crap.” What great advice for each of us! Even if you dont run a billion-dollar company like Nike we are selling something all the time — ourselves like our personalities, skills, values, etc. If you're a parent your constantly selling to your kids. You are selling your values, beliefs, etc. Ensure they are not crap but something that benefits their lives for the better.

Rule 5#

Build a great?team

Jobs believed in the power of a great team and attributed Apple’s success to a team effort. He said that the “greatest people are self-managed.” I couldn't agree more with him. You dont want to be micro-managing people and holding their hand at every stage. I am a firm believer that building a great team starts at home with your family and then extends into the workplace.

Rule 6#

Dont just do it for the $$$?money

Money should always be a by-product. You shouldn't just do stuff for money. Your motivation needs to come from a genuine desire to serve mixed with integrity. Jobs was a very wealthy man. He was worth $10. 5 billion at the time of his death. But his fortune was a by-product of doing work he loved and making an impact. So whoever you are dont make money your motivation, make doing what you love your motivation, and money will follow.

Rule 7#

Be proud of your?products?

Have a sense of pride when it comes to your products if you're in the business of making or selling products. But this can also apply to selling a service. We are all selling some type of service all the time through our very presence on the planet. Ultimately whatever your selling should be part of your core values. Always aim to be a product of the product. That is you walk your talk.?

Rule 8#

Build around customers

Jobs always started with the customer experience and worked backward. When designing the iPhone he started with the customer in mind and then worked backward to the product and all the details. Many brands do the opposite by starting with the product and then working toward their customer. No matter the business you are in, always start with your customer and then work back to your product or service.?

Rule 9#

Marketing is about?values

Steve Jobs was a phenomenal marketer. He marketed Apple like no other has since done. Just watch this short video clip on “Think Different.” An Apple marketing campaign from 1997 that is innovative and ahead of its time. Jobs believed that marketing should be based on a brand’s core values not just selling. More marketers and people in business today can learn a lot about marketing from Jobs.?

Rule 10#

Stay hungry, stay?foolish

This line comes from Steve Jobs's famous 2005 Stanford University Address. If you haven't watched it, please do so right here and share it with others. It's incredibly inspiring and will stir something deep in you. Set some time aside (15 minutes)where you won't be interrupted and watch his speech in its entirety.?

Jobs mentions in his speech that the above line ‘stay hungry, stay foolish’ came from the back of a magazine he saw and was inspired by it. It's all about staying young, curious, and having a sense of wonder about life.?

So there you have it — Steve Jobs's top 10 rules for success.?

Which one or ones do you resonate with the most??

Best to pick one to three for the greatest learning.?

These have something to teach you.?

I strongly suggest that you apply them to your life.?

Remember there’s always a reason why something resonates with you — whether it be a quote, paragraph, one-liner, etc.?

Dont ignore it and just think “oh this was a nice read.”

No, let it teach you as there is clearly a lesson there for you.

Apply it to your life for just this one week. Go over it, write it out a few times, meditate on it, brainstorm it, etc.?

Remember learning from the best of the best at the top of their fields helps bring out the best in you.?

If you want to be great you got to surround yourself with greatness.

Even people that are dead can be of great inspiration and help to you.?

To Your Greatness,
