Steve Demetriou and Jacobs Are Leading by Example

As we continue to normalize our lives, the lessons learned while adapting to the challenges presented by the response to the COVID-19 pandemic can help inform how we move forward and continue to improve our own lives and the lives of those around us. My good friend Steve Demetriou, chairman and CEO of the Jacobs Engineering Group, recently joined me on my Conversations for Good podcast to talk about maintaining a connected culture during COVID and the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Value of a Connected Culture

A lifelong love of basketball has taught Steve how great teams win, and in business, winning starts with a connected culture. A connected culture engages every area of a company from top to bottom, starting at the top. Steve is passionate about a culture that inspires employees and provides accountability and values to work and live by. Steve continues to strive for a connected culture at Jacobs, and focused on maintaining that as a priority even during the pandemic. He implemented town halls to connect with employees and display transparency in how the company was moving ahead. He and the rest of the executives work to foster a culture of caring through which everyone feels they have a voice, especially during turbulent times.

Getting Stronger Through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

In the last year, we have seen many businesses make strides to address diversity, equity and inclusion within their companies and communities. Steve and the team at Jacobs were leaders in this effort and have been making their work environment more diverse, inclusive and equitable for six years. Early on, they recognized the need to ensure that all types of people are represented. The Jacobs team created an action plan to implement their ideas and hold themselves accountable. To further their goals in the community, Steve and his team invest in lower-income and inner-city areas to raise up families and help them break the cycle of poverty.

I have seen many companies make an effort to address disparities in our community, but what Steve and his team at Jacobs are doing, and his steadfast dedication to a better future for everyone, is truly leadership in action. Steve is a continuing shining light in demonstrating business as a force for good.
