Attending a 'Virtual Networking Event' can be way more fun and rewarding if you follow some basic Tips for Success.
I'll be hosting networking events for professionals in the Federal Market. These are some of the tips for them. Pretty much these are good for any meeting.
Show Up 5 Minutes Early
Make sure there are no technical issues. Be ready to start right when the time is set.
Be On Camera
You wouldn't show up to a conference with a bag over your head, right?
Put the sun in front of you. When the sun is behind you, you get 'washed' out and it's hard to even see you.
Raise Your Camera to a Good Height
Put books under your laptop so the camera is even or above your eyes. You can practice by just opening your local camera app on your computer and seeing how you look.
Pronounce Your Name Slowly and Clearly
If we're too embarrassed because we can't remember how to say your name correctly, we avoid even talking to you or remembering you. Make it easy on us to remember you.
Prepare Your Elevator Pitch
A good, simple way to introduce yourself is Name, Company, Competency - like this:
My name is Neil McDonnell with the GovCon Chamber. We help federal buyers and sellers connect with each other.
Bring a Smile
No one wants to network with a grouch

Dress Appropriately
Just find that balance between super formal and ready for the beach. Basic collared shirt should work. Avoid excess skin - both men and women. :)
Don't Sell | Limit Self Promotion
The goal is to meet people, not sell to them. Networking events are a chance to learn about others and introduce yourself.
Be an Active Participant | No Multi-Tasking
Active participation is key to making meaningful connections, and splitting your attention is rude. Put your phone on silent.
Respect Everyone's Time
Don't dominate the discussions. But don't be a wall flower.
If you are in break out rooms for a set amount of time, help everyone have a chance to introduce themselves.
Mute When Not Speaking
Helps avoid background noise, but also allows focus to stay on the person speaking.
