Steps to ensure that you vote successfully

Finding Your Polling Unit

The first step in participating in the electoral process is finding your polling unit. You can find your polling unit by visiting the website of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at www.inecnigeria.org

On the website, you will find a tab labeled “Voter Education,” where you can click on “Find Polling Unit.”?

You will get a prompt to provide some basic information, such as your state of residence and your ward. Once you have provided the required information, the website will display your polling unit.

To check for your polling unit via SMS, text the name of your state, last name, and the last six digits of your voter identification number (VIN) to 09062830860 or 09062830861.

Or, you can visit your local government office and ask for help in finding your polling unit. The officials there will be able to provide you with the necessary information.

You can use the map on your phone in locating the exact location of your polling unit.


Voting

On the day of the election, make sure you arrive at your polling unit early. You can set an alarm on your phone to avoid being late. It is also advisable to dress in comfortable clothing and prepare yourself, do you have any health challenges? Make arrangements for things you may need in case the process takes a while.?

The polling units usually open at 8 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. Make sure you bring along a valid means of identification, such as your voter's card, national ID card, or international passport.

When you arrive at the polling unit, join the queue and wait for your turn. Once it is your turn, present your means of identification to the polling officer. The officer will confirm your details and then give you the ballot paper.

Take the ballot paper to the voting cubicle and mark your preferred candidate with a thumbprint. Fold the ballot paper and drop it in the ballot box provided.

The election period can be a tense time, and it is important to stay safe while exercising your right to vote. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  • Avoid wearing political party-branded clothing or accessories that could make you a target.

  • Also, stay away from any form of violence or activities that may put your safety at risk.
