Stepping in and stepping up
We often hear that timing is everything and it is probably true this time around as well: one week earlier or one week later, this collaboration may not have happened at all. But when Saint-Gobain, a world leader in the engineering of composite materials, whose products can be found virtually anywhere on earth and even in space, chose Altai Images LLC in order to design some panels for its booth in the 2019 JEC Paris Trade Show, the world leading composite show where companies literally showcase the future of humanity, it felt a little bit daunting.
Humility and pride were mixed together, and also anxiety. Never before the stakes had been so high for a young, little design firm nested in Northeastern Ohio.
What also came to my mind was the fact that, just like in Aesop's Tales, the lion sometimes needs the mouse. The conversation started over three countries, two continents and in two languages; what was clear from the get go was that the final design would be a supporting actor, not a lead character. Any potential surge of some designer's ego was killed at birth. Listening was the key, not because the client is a world leader in its field, but simply because it knows its product better than anyone else.
This is great because Altai Images is praising itself for its capacity to listen. The design, by that I mean the visual end-product that is delivered, is only the tip of the iceberg. Hours of conversations are the underground, foundational work; the work no one will ever see.
At the end of this experience, though, after a little celebration, something else came in full light, the answer to a question: can we can step in and step up?
The answer is, with no doubt: YES, WE CAN!
