Stepping into the Milan Jewel Heist 14 Years Later
Caper is a Studio Ochenta original podcast that retells the stories of infamous heists throughout history in cities around the world. In this episode we travel to Milan...
It was February 24th, 2008, and it was a decidedly big night for the Damiani diamond company. Members of the staff were away prepping for a VIP showing, and Tilda Swinton was set to wear the famous Sahara bracelet to the Oscars while accepting her award for best supporting actress. Even though the most precious pieces were being shown in the opening of a new boutique in Tokyo, the showroom was still brimming with glittering diamonds.
A gang of robbers, nine experienced jewel thieves with ties to the Sicilian mafia, had kept a close eye on the diamonds, and planned a tactful theft that would be sure to succeed - by sneaking in from underground. They spent months digging a tunnel from around the block to the basement of the Damiani storefront.?
On the night of the robbery, they climbed through the tunnel to enter the store and managed to stuff duffle bags full of designer jewels. But would these thieves prove to be as cunning as in their past robberies?
