Step In The River

I make it a habit to arrive early when I’m presenting a workshop for a company. Before the workshop begins, whenever it’s possible, I like to mingle with the employees who will be attending. I’m interested in learning what they’re thinking and what they believe they know. I find it invaluable to have some insight into whom I’m presenting to rather than being forced to question them in a classroom environment.

Most people say, “I learn something new every day.” Of course, at the same time, they believe, at least a portion of them, that the techniques they’re using work just fine with their customers and there’s no real need to change. Most say they understand their customers and their needs.

Very few people really understand their customers, or themselves for that matter. One must constantly renew their relationships with their customers. With everything new your customer learns he or she changes. With everything new you learn you change. That means everyone is consistently in flux. To continually satisfy your customers you must learn the techniques that enable you to identify the sometimes nearly unperceivable changes that are occurring around you.

The fact that things constantly change makes me think back to the words of Heraclitus, No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.

Heraclitus also said, There is nothing permanent except change.”
