Step One - Building a more 'useful' Cup of Joe connection!

Step One - Building a more 'useful' Cup of Joe connection!

Where is the Cup of Joe? Did they just get lazy and stop working?

Sorry everyone!

I have been working behind the scenes to improve connections and networking in the veteran community! We want focused connections!

There is an event in Ottawa on 5 June organized by David Hill and the fantastic Veteran Task Force for the city! You can RSVP here! 200 people have registered.

The first step was two questions:

Why are you coming to this event?!?!

The answers were actually surprising as it is not what most veteran events are geared towards...

The topics with the most interest were the following accounting for over 70% of the interest (chart below):

  • Leadership Development
  • Business Management
  • Technology
  • Risk Management
  • Project Management

What are the hot topics!

The next step is to link the right person on the topics based on your efforts so far:

Most people attending want to network, but in future conferences I want to link the right one-on-one conversation: example two people building a brand or two people researching risk management. On this event I will now send one-on-one introduction emails based on the whole answer.

The introduction emails will be sent on Sunday night and will look something like this:

We will recommend people meet for a 'Cup of Joe' based on the shared verb-noun. This way the social event is not the same conversations with people you know - but instead you will know three people interested in the same topics for a deeper connection!

The next step is to run webinars and learning opportunities about topics that interest people. These webinars will be about 15 people and could be face-to-face as well! Webinars that I am interested in running around topics like:

  • Leadership Development
  • Business Management
  • Technology
  • Risk Management
  • Project Management

If anyone would like to present at these events, let me know!

Lastly, with other organizations, I want to build 6-10 person peer groups. It might be veterans that are interested in a certain topic - like Leadership Development - so that they can meet up and share ideas on that topic.

What do you think!

Caleb, keep doing - you’re onto a good thing. I had 2 follow ups from our Wed night Peer Group session already!

Caleb, I like your approach to facilitating networking with purpose. I look forward to experiencing it in person one day.

This is impressive! Thank you for doing this work!

You are right on... networking is at the top of the list. Just imagine the community that could be built if the first question that we asked each other once we got know each other is... what introductions could I make for you that be helpful? The best networkers are the best at making introductions to others!

Registered, Caleb. Will be based off Ruff and my tolerance. He did well at CANSEC but it is detrimental to his training to push him too hard. Thanks for the advice the other day.
