Step forward with glutes
Perhaps surprisingly, I consider this a progression from the step up exercise - I've discovered that most people find gluteal contractions easier when their hip is slightly flexed, which is what happens when your foot is on a step!
However, most of us don't spend our lives walking up and down stairs, so once we've got the hang of using our glutes on a step, it's time to think about what we actually do most of the time when we walk, i.e. walking on the flat.
In this video I started by talking about how to get the glutes firing without a step, and then progressed into a step forward exercise. Of course, the next step from here is to actually walk while getting your glutes firing... which will hopefully be obvious!
While you will need to think about this initially, the ultimate goal is for your glutes control your hips in their sockets and then propel you forward automatically. So I would suggest initially that you think about your glutes at every step... and when this gets easy, start taking breaks from thinking about it, before checking back in and seeing whether it's happening when you're not thinking about it.
