?? Best-Selling Theory to Make More Strategic Career Decisions

In my role heading career services at a top business school, here is one of the questions I come across over and over:

?? “What should I do (next) in my career? And what do I truly want and can do?”

The reality is, that from early careers to senior executives in a transition, many are unsure of their true passion or purpose.

I know how overwhelming it can be ????

As a career coach, I've reflected on these questions so many times on my journey to support my students, walk the talk, and go after my dream career & life!

That's why I'll share with you here the best-selling theory I've found most helpful & that can guide you when thinking about what to do in your career ????

"Optimize your career by interesting. Whenever you have a choice of what to do, choose the more interesting path. Wherever we are in our lives, we may not yet have identified something overtly meaningful that we want to do or are good at or to many things we are passionate about. But we all have things we're more drawn and want to learn more about" as Columbia Business Professor Dorie Clark breaks down in the book "The Long Game: how to be a long-term thinker in a short-term world".

?? Step-by-Step Guide to Optimize Your Career for Long-Term Success & Joy

Here is a practical guide on the way to approach this best-selling career advice that has changed my life and those I support their careers:

?? Step 1 - Identify what you're interested in

For example for me is 1) the world of work & career development, 2) Human relations, 3) Public speaking and 4) Happiness and positive psychology.

?? What are your top areas of interest? Reflect with me!

?? Step 2 - Focus your career on what's interesting to you

For example, for me, that is career services, as it allows me to explore and learn more about what I am most interested in the world of work and careers.

I get to discover full-time career content and resources, access the best job search tools, cultivate relationships with HR directors and top voices and even develop and deliver masterclasses & coaching on all I learn. A dream I saw 20 years down the line, now a reality being 26!

?? What interest areas do you get to explore in your career? Or which ones you wish you could explore more in your career?

?? Step 3 - Reflect regularly on your evolving interests

Interests change over time, and it is important to take steps in your main job or outside to keep diving deep into what excites you.

I immerse myself almost every day in scientific articles, books, and podcasts on relationships and happiness. And when I get to bring this into my career e.g., in networking events or masterclasses I lead, it feels so exciting…!

What I've found most impactful here is to check in regularly with myself on:

?? What I'm truly most interested in? What do I want to learn more about? Which people/conversations do I find most interesting?

PS: All questions I recommend asking yourself once a year at least, or especially when you are looking for a new job or a more fulfilling and aligned career path!

?? Step 4 - Take strategic steps to grow your career

Not all, will be able to quit their job or be in a job that allows you to discover exactly all your interests and even less at once. That's why it is important to take steps in and out of work to explore and keep finding opportunities more strategically in your career to dive into what interests you most.

For example, in line with the areas of my top interests, here would be some concrete examples of career opportunities optimizing by interest:

???? Continue focusing on the world of careers in my role, or a similar one, leading career services.

???? Working for a top podcast on careers & relationships.

???? Finding a job in companies like LinkedIn for example in their team Get Hired by LinkedIn News Europe , Headspace for Organizations , Self Space or Flexa both in line with my interests in the world of work & mental health.

???? And even became an entrepreneur building a venture, focusing on career services and what I want to explore deeper.

And for instance, outside work, I could volunteer or attend one of the leading happiness & positive psychology conferences annually. I can also continue reading books and podcasts on all the things I'm interested in. Try to engage with content and people in the spaces I'm most interested in, etc…

No right or wrong choices here, if you're optimizing by interest in and out of work, that's the key. And I believe that is living your dream career!

?? What steps can you take or explore in the future in your career journey to optimize your career by interest? What would this mean to you?

PS: Not all need to happen at the same time, just decide strategically in line with your interests along your career journey. You will be surprised ?????
