Step-by-Step Guide on How to Start a Podcast

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Start a Podcast

Step 1: Develop your podcast concept

All great podcasts share one thing in common: their content is interesting and relevant. With this in mind, it’s clear that if you want to have real success with a podcast of your own, you must be sure that your show's concept, or main focus, is exciting and relevant to a broad audience. Whether you cover sports, current events, religion, politics, business, or some other mainstream facet of life, be sure to choose something that people will be drawn to and find some familiarity with.?

You also need to ensure that your content is well-researched, delivered clearly and engagingly, and maintains consistency. People should be interested in what you have to say, and locking in a solid concept for your platform is the first step in ensuring you get the response you’re looking for.?

Step 2: Formatting your podcast

This step is really about putting together a layout for how your show will run. You need to begin with a one-sheet that details the various parts of your show; introduction, information piece, visuals, special guests, etc. Be sure that you keep a somewhat consistent format for your show. You will want to build a familiar outlay of your podcast with your audience so that they have a relative idea of what to look forward to. It is also essential to consider how you schedule each part of your show concerning time slots: every segment of your show should be timed.?

Step 3: Podcast equipment and set-up

What we see when we watch a podcast on YouTube or listen to one on Apple Podcasts is a calculated and well-formed broadcast. Podcast equipment matters and is extremely important if you want your show to look and sound professional. To develop a large following and a successful podcast, you’ll need to invest in a good computer (preferably one with enough space and capacity for video editing), a quality camera, lighting, a microphone and earpiece set up, and a soundboard and video editing software. Places like Guitar Center or online shopping like Sweetwater can provide you with excellent sound equipment. You can also look online for a seemingly endless list of quality cameras made for filming content.?

Step 4: Podcast software selection

Software selection is all about efficiency and quality. Software selection for your podcast will determine the types of features you can employ in terms of video and sound editing, as well as the quality with which any editing plugins will operate. Moreover, you must ensure that your hardware is compatible with whatever software you decide to run. Suppose your podcast includes multiple visuals, advanced camera angles, and switches. In that case, you’ll also need to be sure that you choose software capable of providing you with the digital tools you need to format that sort of visual undertaking.??

Step 5: Recording your first episode

Recording your first episode should only be done after you have written (or at least put together) an outline of what material you will be covering and the time it will take you to cover it. You want to be prepared. Do not try and improvise your way through an entire podcast episode. What you’ll likely be left with, if you attempt that, is either lots of rambling or long moments of dead silence.?

Additionally, be sure that you account for the fact that people’s attention spans are not very significant. Include humor, get to the point with information, and speak confidently and concisely. People need to be led by you when they hear from you. Use your time to engage your audience as much as possible, and be prepared if your first episode does not come out as perfectly as you first envisioned. There is a learning curb, so plan, do your best, and keep moving forward.

Step 6: Audio editing

Audio editing is essential to any podcast because what your audience hears is just as (if not more) important than what they see. Sound editing eliminates static, low points where volume needs to be increased, distortion, and background noise. There is also a very important feature known as vocal compression (which can be done with virtually every modern sound editing software), which increases the decibels of the voice and gives the overall sound a balanced and clear sound that is easy to listen to.

Step 7: Podcast artwork and logo

Developing artwork and a logo for your podcasts is a great way to boost your marketing success and build familiarity with your brand. Whether you do it on your own or you outsource talent to do it for you, be sure that the logo and artwork associated with your brand are catchy, professional, high-quality, and communicative of the message you are trying to send. Some podcasters also incorporate sound marketing similar to a theme song or score played at the opening or closing of each episode.

Step 8: Setting up your podcast with Anchor?

Anchor by Spotify is perhaps one of the easiest ways to start a successful podcast. This simple product provides various services such as a podcasting platform, promotion tools, stats and analytics trackers designed to help you keep track of viewers/listeners and other demographics, unlimited hosting, and streamlined distribution. The product is also equipped with the capacity for custom embedded players and unique social media players for podcasters with more significant experience. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, Anchor boasts 100% Free sign-up.?

Step 9: Launch and increase your viewers/listeners

This final step is launching your podcast. Be sure to promote beforehand with friends, family, and anyone in your social network. Utilize social media and be sure to get the word out to increase your chances of getting people to tune in. You want to be sure that like and subscribe features are also always mentioned so that you can be sure to build a strong following and gain momentum with each new episode.?

Be sure to follow these ten simple steps, and you’ll be sure to have a successful podcast!
