Did you get sucked in to the popular New York Times puzzle games in the past year? I definitely did! Wordle, Quordle (and even Nerdle!) are now fun brain teasers a few minutes each day. I’m always amazed that when I get stuck and can’t figure out the answer, all it takes is walking away from it for a minute. When I come back to the screen, the answer jumps out at me. It’s like magic. It works every time.?
Sometimes we think the answer to anything in life lies in trying harder and keeping at it. But the reality is that the solution is often found by walking away from a challenge.
If you have kids, do you remember how in the middle of your toddler’s temper tantrum, if you chose to walk away - they’d quickly get their act together and follow you? It usually worked a lot better than reasoning with them.?
This week, I stepped away from everything - business, home, clients and my daily routine to go to a resort spa for four days. I indulged in delicious food, had spa treatments and lounged around the property in my white spa robe. I tried aerial yoga (and hung upside down) and a rebound trampoline fitness class for the first time. I watched the sunset over the desert from the rooftop spa deck with a glass of wine. I got so relaxed that I didn’t think about much of anything nor did I read a book or check email. I didn’t make a single outbound call.?
It’s amazing how much clarity I had on things by the time I hopped on the flight home. It took walking away from some challenges to see them in a new light. Solutions came to me easily. I now see possibilities where I hadn’t seen them. I feel lighter.?

What could you walk away from today that might propel you towards a fresh perspective and new solutions? It doesn’t look like banging your head against the challenge is working all that well, is it? ?

2 年Love this post, Sylvia! It's a great reminder for us to pause and take a breather. Sometimes, it’s really important to do yourself a favor and splurge a little on yourself. ?? Good self-care is a great way to reduce stress.

2 年Truly just stepping away from everything for a day sounds so rejuvenating! Thank you for the advice, and I will definitely be more mindful about taking time to step away.

2 年Such good advice! I know this isn't COMPLETELY shutting down to reframe, but I'm going to the Inc. 5000 conference in Arizona next week and am making sure I have a few hours by the pool and not just the conference :) I'll report back.

2 年Awh, that sounds so tempting and mesmerising: don't do anything for four days in a Spa. I have a faint sense of the depth of relaxation and calm that you feel after those days. I'll make it a goal for myself! And my wife ;-)
