Step 1 for Taking Control of Your Screen Time: Setting Clear Boundaries

In today's digital age, screens have become a lifeline both personally and professionally. With the constant influx of emails, notifications, and work-related tasks, it's easy to get caught up in a never-ending cycle of screen time.

In this edition of "Peak Performance Insider," we'll explore step 1 for taking control of your digital device usage as a leader: setting clear boundaries. We'll discuss three practical tips, with real-life examples of what they look like in action.

Three Actionable Tips for Setting Clear Boundaries:

Designated Tech-Free Time: Allocate specific periods throughout the day where you disconnect from screens entirely. Use this time for activities that recharge you, such as exercise, reading, or spending quality time with loved ones.

Example at Work:

Sarah, a team lead in a marketing agency, designates the first hour of her workday, from 9am to 10am, as tech-free time, and encourages her team members to do the same. During this time, she focuses solely on face-to-face interactions, brainstorming sessions or creative work that doesn't require screens.

Example at Home:

A family decides that 7-8pm will be tech-free time. During this time, they put away their smartphones and tablets, and turn off the TV. Instead, they play board games, read books, go for a walk or have meaningful conversations with one another.

No-Screen Zones: Identify areas in your workspace or home where screens are off-limits. This could be your bedroom, dining area, or even your personal sanctuary. By creating these no-screen zones, you can establish a healthier work-life balance.

Example at Work:

Henry, the CEO of a digital marketing agency, establishes a no-screen zone during certain meetings. He designates a specific meeting room as the no-screen zone. During these meetings, team members are encouraged to take notes using pen and paper, engage in face-to-face discussions and actively participate without the distractions of screens.

Example at Home:

Nicole creates a no-screen zone in her bedroom. She decides it should be a peaceful and tech-free space. She uses this space for reading physical books, practicing mindfulness or meditation and journalling. This helps her unwind more effectively and promotes better sleep.

Turn Off Notifications: Constant notifications can be a major distraction. Take control by selectively enabling notifications for essential and urgent matters only. This will help you stay focused on the task at hand and minimize interruptions.

Example:

A team lead at a software development company has a major project deadline approaching and needs to focus on coding and debugging a critical feature. To avoid distractions he turns off certain notifications.

On his phone, he turns off notifications from social media apps (Facebook, instagram, X, TikTok). He disables notifications for non-essential messaging apps like WhatsApp and Snapchat.

On his computer, John turns off email notifications and chat messaging like Slack or Microsoft teams. He sets specific times during the day to check his emails and respond to messages, rather than being constantly interrupted by incoming notifications. He communicates his availability to his team and encourages them to do the same.

Why is it imperative for leaders to set clear boundaries?

Improved Focus and Productivity: Research shows that excessive screen time can lead to decreased focus and productivity. By setting boundaries, you create dedicated time for deep work and strategic thinking, leading to more impactful leadership.

Enhanced Well-being and Mental Health: Excessive screen time has been associated with increased stress, anxiety, and burnout. By disconnecting from screens, you can prioritize self-care, recharge, and maintain a healthier work-life balance.

Role Modeling for Your Team: As leaders, our actions speak louder than words. By setting clear boundaries and demonstrating a healthy relationship with technology, you inspire your team members to do the same. This fosters a culture of well-being and productivity within your organization.

Taking control of your screen time is not only crucial for your well-being but also for your effectiveness as a leader. Setting clear boundaries around your digital use is the first step towards leading by example and creating a healthier and more productive work environment.
