STEM NOLA's 'Heart & Circulatory System' STEM Saturday Was Another Resounding Success

STEM NOLA celebrated another successful STEM Saturday on October 12, 2024, this time focusing on the intriguing “Heart & Circulatory System.” Participants dissected sheep hearts, experienced virtual reality and 3D printed model hearts, and built working stethoscopes and their own mechanical hearts. Held at the John P. Lyons Recreation Center, the event attracted a remarkable 223 participants, fostering a love for science and medicine among students in grades K-12.

Thriving Community Engagement

With 183 students pre-registered and 40 more registering on-site, the event saw a diverse turnout from various schools, showcasing the enthusiasm for STEM education in the New Orleans area. In total, 116 schools were represented, demonstrating a broad community interest in fostering the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals.

Making a Difference

A staggering 72% of attendees qualified for free or reduced lunch, highlighting the impact of STEM NOLA’s commitment to making STEM education accessible to all. With 49 college volunteers and 12 medical professional volunteers dedicating a combined total of over 213 mentor hours, the event not only provided educational experiences but also fostered mentorship and community engagement.
