In addition to saving costs, students can use OER resources as a supplement to their learning in class. We all learn and retain information in different ways. OER materials can help a student learn subject matter from a another voice or from another teaching style. Using OER as a standalone, students can reinforce or deepen their knowledge of a particular subject/topic.

Be skeptical of anyone who claims to understand how a university works or its purpose. The larger and more successful a university is, the less likely anyone is to truly comprehend how all its parts work together. In 2024, these complexities are displayed on the world stage. Multiple university presidents have been let go due to their handling of social and geopolitical conflicts, and many campuses strive to balance freedom of expression while ensuring a safe space for the entire community. Simultaneously, their existence permits a deeper discussion of these social and geopolitical conflicts. This is just one example. Establishing a world-class university requires embracing such complexity. A successful university creates conditions for a vibrant community of faculty, students, administrators, alumni, and the public to generate new knowledge, learn, support, and challenge each other. Decision rights are widely distributed, complicating monitoring, standardization, and central control. Such control often conflicts with the university's primary mission: fostering a space where old and new ideas can be safely explored and shared. This essence of academic freedom is seemingly simple yet incredibly challenging to practice. However, when properly established, with a fierce dedication to academic freedom, diversity of thought, and intense focus on generating new knowledge, universities serve as economic engines that change the face of a city, attract global talent, foster creativity, and improve the lives of their stakeholders, and the public. This is why, in my initial post, I emphasized the difficulty of the task Kazakhstan undertook in building Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business, and why it was (and remains) such a worthy endeavor—one that universities around the world should care deeply about, as we do here at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business. The world has already benefited from Nazarbayev University, but with more success will come more complexity, more challenges, and the energy and will to overcome each new challenge, leading to even greater societal benefits. From Bihar (or Kerala) to Boston, the Fulbright ticket gifted more than a decade back was well worth it. Maybe you might be lucky, too. ? Most importantly, for a grassroots (at that time) social impact professional, I would think twice before buying a domestic air ticket. So, the $$ was beyond a dream. Then, add a set of multicultural friends and a diverse network of bright minds. It was a first-class ticket to learning the world. ? Why am I writing all of this? It's that time of year when the cycle to pursue a graduate programme in the US kicks off. It starts with Fulbright. If you start late and miss it, you will regret it. ?? How can I help you? For over a decade, I have provided pro-bono support to aspirant Fulbrighters in the field of public policy in their application journey. The focus is on students who are not from a privileged socio-economic base, working at the grassroots, and committed to social impact. This is very important to me, as it's a precious time commitment. Even if I don't have a magic wand! ? Why do I do this? Pay forward. It's simple. Deepak Dogra was that to me. Also - I don't believe the folks I support should be paying ventures (mask by whatever name) to prepare for this journey. There is no travel agent who can ensure a ticket! So, why pay? ??
