Steering wheel-less vehicles and the elimination of the car park: hype or reality?
Tech guru Elon Musk announced last week that self-driving cabs would be on the roads before 2027.?
Musk’s latest creation, the Cybercab, could be yours for under $30,000, which is considerably less than the lowest priced Tesla today at around $52,000.?
Musk took to X to suggest that in the future, car parks would no longer be needed in cities.?
CyberCab has no steering wheel or pedals, and rather than a plug it will charge via induction.?
But the excitement for this new promise was short lived as on Friday media outlets reported that Tesla shares fell nearly 9%, slashing around $60bn from the company’s value.
Despite the hype around self-driving cars, it seems that skepticism is high.?
According to Guardian reporters , investors attending a Cybercab launch event were not given the timelines and figures they were hoping for, but were instead presented with an array of promo material.?
The Verge called Musk’s creation a cool looking prototype , but said that it needed to be much more than that. The event was the perfect opportunity for the company to provide insight on the car’s critical safety features or to delve into detail about its high-tech components. But the frustration was felt by many as the focus was less about the capabilities of the vehicle and more about its arrival in less than 2 years’ time.?
Autonomous vehicles both on land and at sea are hailed as the future of transportation, but there are so many hurdles that need to be overcome first. This latest event by Musk shows that investors are demanding more. They tired of the promises. They want answers to some of the most pressing questions about the true safety of autonomous vehicles.?
The Verge explores some of the hurdles in this article .?
