Steering The Second Half Of Your Career As A Leader

Steering The Second Half Of Your Career As A Leader

Almost everyone I know looks for stability in their career. It's obvious because who wouldn't want that? However, no one is stable until they find that aspect of their career that defines stability.

In today's time, we no longer live to work in the same company till retirement age. It's no longer the definition of stability. Lifestyles have changed, new financial policies have come into effect, and family goals have evolved, to name a few.?

So, what happens is working in just one career, doing the same thing over and over again is not going to cut it anymore. This is where leaders also face a dilemma in life like a midlife crisis. And this is when they tend to develop the need to do something new or different. In this post, we're going to talk about managing the second half of your career and how to go about it.

Taking the first step in your second-half career

There are a few ways you can use to start the second half of your career and take it to a more exciting level. Let's look at these interesting directions.

  1. Start career mentoring

You've gained knowledge in your career. Not just bookish knowledge. In fact, you're done and dusted with the book and you've made your own set of leadership tips and rules. If you want to share it with the world, it's time to start career mentoring and put that feather in your hat.

You can lead your career and mentor those who are starting out.

  1. Explore new avenues before entering the second half of your career

Many leaders find voluntary work more rewarding. Some other leaders find entering a different department in the same industry meaningful.

Whatever it may be, exploring new avenues before reaching your second-half career phase can help you get a good head start.?

  1. Be open to learning new things

As a leader, you are not just a working machine. No one is! You are a knowledge worker which means that your skills need constant sharpening. There is a constant need for growth with the developments that take place in your industry. Being curious and learning something new can open up new doors for the second half of your career.

Apart from the above, your SiQ is what will get you to really learn about the direction you should be headed. Firstly, it shows you who you are and your purpose. Secondly, it helps you understand the path you should take. So, if you have your SiQ in place, the above three ways will complement your efforts and you won't feel like your career is stagnant.
