* Dear Fabio, please tell us a little more about yourself!

With pleasure. At thyssenkrupp Aerospace I have been responsible for business development in the DACH region, Belgium and Italy since October 2020. Before that I worked as a Business Development Executive at thyssenkrupp System Engineering. So all in all at thyssenkrupp since 2016.

About my background: I have 20 years of experience in the aerospace industry, both in engineering and business administration. I worked for around seven years as a systems engineer in flight mechanics on large Airbus programs such as the A380, A320 and A350 XWB and then worked in management consulting.

?* What is your area of responsibility at thyssenkrupp Aerospace?

Together with my team, I take care of business development in the DACH region. Our customers are our focus from start to finish. We listen to them, understand their needs and goals, and work with them to develop tailored solutions to address and overcome the challenges they face in their supply chains.

Of course we are not alone in this. Our dedicated solution design team supports us in developing customer-specific solutions. We benefit from our global network and our presence in more than 20 countries.

*What exactly does thyssenkrupp Aerospace offer?

That's a good question because many of our prospects only associate us with the material distribution business and that is indeed our heritage and track record. But there are many more services and solutions that we offer, and bigger value we deliver, related to supply chain management.

Our solutions are tailor-made, modular, and scalable and support our clients in the design, management and execution of their supply chains. They encompass three areas and associated business models, namely: material distribution, 3PL (3rd party logistics) and supply chain control towers.

As for material distribution, we buy, process and supply raw materials. Our range of materials includes aluminium, titanium, steel, aluminum bronze, nickel and copper alloys as well as plastics. Our products include plates, sheets, rods, tubes, extruded profiles, castings and forgings. Our processing capabilities include sawing, cutting (including water jet cutting) and other machining operations.

3PL services include inbound processing, inventory management, warehousing, outbound processing, order fulfillment, and intralogistics on behalf of manufacturers and their suppliers.

Our Control Tower solutions can offer our customers greater added value depending on their supply chain management outsourcing strategy and requirements.

?* What's the coolest thing about your job Fabio?

It`s incredibly multifaceted and impactful on both company and client side. On one hand it has to do with people and human relations that are at the root of every good and healthy business. On the other it has to do with complex systems (the aerospace supply chains), with complex problems and disruptions requiring reasoned and sounding solutions. And above all it is relevant, as we work at the solutions of the most critical challenges of the industry.

* What are currently the biggest challenges in the aviation industry?

We see the global economy is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the aerospace industry clearly rebounded in 2022. ?

Supply chain disruptions limit growth. It therefore remains the greatest challenge for aerospace companies to ensure material supply. The industry is currently primarily concerned with reconfiguring supply chains and making them more resilient and differentiated.

In addition, price increases in the industry caused by supply bottlenecks in connection with increased fuel and energy prices are exacerbated.

The “demand shock” caused by the pandemic and the subsequent restart, combined with the lack of transparency in the supply chain, led to significant shortages of raw materials that are still important today, such as steel. In addition, geopolitical conflicts, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, are affecting material supplies, such as titanium, since Russia supplied around 50% of aerospace titanium.

But the aerospace is also headed into its biggest technology transformation ever, as it`s called to significantly contributing to decarbonization, through new sustainable propulsion systems for a new sustainable aviation. Means supply chains are going to further change and evolve coherently.?

* What makes a successful collaboration in a team for you?

A shared vision and ambition, diversity, flexibility and versatility. Above all, a never give up attitude!

?* What were the biggest challenges you had to overcome so far?

It was and still is a great challenge to develop a company`s business in a very unfavorable market environment. The pandemic crisis has brought aviation to a virtual standstill and eventually developed into a permanent crisis. We are currently in an unprecedented period of market and economic uncertainty. But precisely these challenges also bring incredible opportunities that we are currently working on with great passion.

For example, since the summer we have been working with Deutsche Aircraft, a relatively young German aircraft manufacturer, built on very big legacy, that wants to make aviation more sustainable and efficient. We help them with our consulting services to design, manage and execute their raw material supply chain from scratch. We help them build and secure their supply chain and make it as stable and resilient as possible.

?* How important is digitization at thyssenkrupp Aerospace?

Digitalisation is at the core of our strategy and efforts. It is a key enabler of transparency and therefore resilience for both our own supply chains and those of our clients and partners. ?

Many initiatives are already underway and we are working on further partnerships on various topics.
