Steel & Alloy – Union Street 3 years Lost Time accident free.

On 25th May 2024 Steel & Alloy Gonvarri Industries Union Street site completed 3 Years Lost Time accident free.

This is a fantastic achievement by the team and another step on our continued safety journey.

A journey that all of the Steel & Alloy plants have been on for some years now making our way along the Bradley Curve.

Initially we were definably REACTIVE, relying on the employees natural instincts and a heavy reliance on the Health & Safety manager.

Management commitment, investment in training and the setting of rules pushed us into the DEPENDANT stage.

We are now well established in the INDEPENDANT stage using initiatives like the Safety Steward, Chasing the risk, One to Ones and shop floor audits all helping to build our safety culture.?? ?

The congratulations need’s to got to ALL our employees. We are fortunate to have an experienced and mature workforce who have listened and responded to what was needed.

Results.

The results speak for themselves.

454 Hazards raised so far this year. Raised by 61 different employees (Which is great)

20 Dangerous occurrences raised by 16 different employees.

Unfortunately, we have had 2 minor accidents and we will learn from these.

Next steps.

How do we reach the INTERDEPENDANT stage?

We need to learn from other Gonvarri sites, we need to share our learning to ensure a safer environment for all.

Quite simply we need to take more care of each other and any visitors or contractors on site.

As staff and managers, we need to set the example, a good saying I heard a few years ago is that the highest standard that we can expect from others it the lowest we demonstrate so we must set the example.
