Stealing with pride

2nd Climate Adaptation Article. The 'term stealing with pride' is one used in the National Trust as a form of dramatic 'learn from others' and none more so than when steering through the dark arts of climate adaptation. As I have said to many colleagues who work on mitigation. "hah carbon is simple" because in theory you can measure it subject to many caveats but adaptation is full of stuff like subjectivity, values wrapped up in uncertainty and probability. "Which future do you want and accept" is a question I often ask? or "which climate are you adapting to"?
I start from a premise of: there is hardly a unique problem that others have not been through and so I have been stealing from others and learning and testing. These stealing forays range from the Historic Environment Scotland's top down data led approach to climate risk, to the RSPB bottom up approach on its reserves on climate impacts and response.(we now use both) Our overall approach is wrapped up in ISO14090 (climate adaptation) and our Climate, Environmental Management System but even this ISO approach struggles with 'heritage and values' and so we have a hybrid which fits the organisations 'ways of working and thinking' (structure and culture) We developed a simple hand rail to guide us through this minefield as the whole area is fraught with management speak which can switch most people off. In the coming weeks I will develop more on the handrail and the psychology behind it (I am a big fan of understanding the ways of thinking behind climate change) #Climate #adaptation #nationaltrust #climatechange

1 年Well said Keith Jones, I couldn't agree more, there is no one solution fits all especially in heritage & climate adaptation. The cultural values and significance vary so does the micro-climate in its setting, more like a multivariable and multi-constraints expressions! Nevertheless, Data & community voices are key to informed decisions.
Good stuff Keith. Will steal forwards, with deference to those who've done so much so far.
