Preparing for an Interview - Best Practices

As we’ve seen over the past couple of months, layoffs have been more than common within the?tech industry. And with the collapse of?Silicon Valley Bank, more people are now in search of a job or preparing for an interview at a new firm. It’s likely many people are scratching their heads, trying to recall how to navigate the?interview process.

With access to resources like our?Consulting Career Guide?and?Technical Interview Guide,?you already have a head start on other candidates. Now, it’s up to you to put these resources to?work, gain?confidence, and take the?right steps?before, during, and after interviews to give yourself the best chance of success.

1. Make sure the career/job fits your interest:?before you pursue this interview, it’s always important to ask yourself if this opportunity is right for you. Have you fully read the job description? Have you networked with people at the company to see what the day-to-day is like? Are you fine with the location?
2. Speak with those who’ve done it before:?be sure to reach out to alumni or past/current employees working in the role you are applying for. What type of interview questions did they receive? What gave them success? What do interviewers tend to look for at that firm?
3. Take advantage of resources offered by the firm:?oftentimes, when you receive an opportunity to interview at a firm, you’ll also receive some material to help you prepare for it. Some firms, like McKinsey & Company, for example, provide candidates with workshops to perfect their case skills with members of the team prior to their interview. Be on the lookout for support like this as you navigate the prep process.
4. Set yourself up with a review schedule:?just like preparing for an exam, setting yourself up with a calendar for review can help ensure you don’t cram for your interview the night before. Give yourself plenty of time to prepare so you don’t feel stressed when it comes time to execute.
5. Confidence is key:?even if you’re nervous, projecting confidence will help you feel less nervous and help you perform better on interview day. Try your best to be prepared ahead of time, ensure that your computer and any associated links are working correctly (if the interview is remote), and make eye contact with the recruiter or team member interviewing you.
6. Follow up after your interview:?always remember to follow up after your interview. Sending as much as a quick thank you following your interview via email or LinkedIn can sometimes be the difference between a no and a yes. When roles are as competitive as they are now, sometimes all you need is a little bit of separation.

Interviews can be a?stressful experience. However, by following these steps, you place yourself on the?right path to success.?And again, practice is?key. Prepare with friends, family, or fellow students to ensure you’re confident, cool, and collected when it’s?your time to shine.
