Seating Strategy Overhaul | Southwest Ends Open Seating

Southwest Airlines transitions from open to assigned seating, aiming to improve customer experience and operational profitability amid growing industry competition.

Southwest Airlines is ending its open seating policy and will start assigning seats, allowing the airline to charge premiums for certain seats. This change responds to customer demand and aims to enhance profitability amid increasing competition from major and ultra-low-cost carriers. Additionally, Southwest will introduce overnight "red-eye" flights to maximize aircraft utilization. Despite a history of profitability, Southwest has struggled recently due to rising labor and fuel costs, as well as competition and operational challenges, including a significant service disruption in December 2022. The shift to assigned seating, which has been under consideration for a year, aims to attract more customers and boost revenue. However, it will require aircraft reconfiguration and won’t fully roll out until 2025.
