Staying in Touch
I watched a movie while traveling called ‘Last Flag Flying’. If you haven’t seen it check it our on whatever streaming service you use. Not an action adventure just some good acting. The story is set in 2003 about a soldier coming home to be buried from the Gulf War. His Dad takes his body home with 2 of his Marine Corp buddies.
The fact that it is set in 2003 means it is before every human being on the planet had a cell phone and spend most of their day glued to some electronic device. The dialogue that happens is not interrupted by glowing devices, beeps and buzzes as would happen today. It shows what life was like before the era we live in today when we actually had conversations.
I’m as guilty as the next person in this regard. I have a running joke with my wife that now that they track your ‘time’ that she will have more than me. I have to admit if you totaled up all my devices and not just the phone I would be clearly declared the victor in a game I really do not want to win.
So my advice to myself is turn it off every once and a while. Electronic detox is become very avant garde today. Once of the later scenes in the movie shows one character buying flip phones for the three of them to ‘stay in touch’. While there have been some positives, how wrong that premise has proved to be.
