Staying Safe on the Road

It has been my observation that post pandemic drivers appear more aggressive and exhibit less patience. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic fatalities reached a 16-year high in 2021. Almost 43,000 people died in traffic accidents in 2021, a 10.5% increase from 2020.
Let’s take a look at some possible reasons for this disturbing trend and some ways to keep you safe.
Traffic congestion: It’s frustrating for all us! Accidents can easily occur in stop and go traffic. Some drivers are more impatient than others and as a result, drive recklessly.
Running late: We have all been late for work, a meeting, or other appointments. While some accept that delays are inevitable, others try to make up lost time by driving aggressively.
Blatant disregard: There are some drivers who unfortunately have no regard for traffic laws or the safety of others.

Anonymity: ?Much like faceless keyboard warriors who are bold on social media platforms and gaming sites, aggressive drivers may assume there will be no accountability due to the unlikelihood of seeing the same drivers again.
Regardless of the factors associated with these types of drivers, there are some practical things you can do to stay safe on the road.
Remember, you cannot control the reckless behavior of aggressive drivers. Don’t make the situation worse by engaging them. Stay focused on getting to your destination safely.
