Staying Relevant: Putting the More in So Much More

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was established in London on June 6, 1844, by George Williams. Seven years later the Y made its way to the Old South Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Over 170 years later the Y and its mission have spread to over 10,000 communities in the United States alone. With the rise of boutique fitness and at-home workout apps, how does the Y stay relevant? The answer is simple, by being so much more.

The phrase "so much more" is used by YMCA professionals a lot. It's important to the communities we serve that we remain true to our word when we say this, it's easy to say "so much more" but it's important to actually put the "more" in "so much more". One way YMCAs across the nation are doing this is by participating in Y360, an at-home healthy living app with tons of classes for members to partake in. Y360 has more than just fitness classes though, there are classes for children in the arts, cooking classes, STEAM classes, and many other options for families!

Another way the Y remains relevant is through social impact. The Y is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Y raises money through annual campaigns to support its communities through need-based scholarships for memberships, programs, child care, etc. The Y works hard to provide equitable experiences for all regardless of the inability to pay or financial circumstance. This is perhaps the most important way the Y is staying relevant.

What's in it for staff? When you join the Y's team, you become a part of a community that is looking to make a change, a community of givers, a community of neighbors, and a community that looks towards tomorrow. You may see it as working at a gym or child care center but when you join the Y's team, you become a part of a team that is so much more.

Whether you are looking for a new gym, job, child care center, camp, etc., consider joining the Y, you too can be a part of something that is so much more.
